John Shannon: Canucks should not deviate from long-term plan to rebuild
December 14 2017
Sportsnet's John Shannon talks about the emotionally draining effect of falling behind as quickly as the Canucks did last night. It's "devastating" but there is little reason to give up any talent or future picks since the transition continues for this hockey club. At least there is a lot of hope in Vancouver. "It starts with the kids," he says. "Let's not get ahead of ourselves about what this team is and how long it's going to take."

Shorthouse on Canucks loss to Preds: 'It was a collective surrender'
December 14 2017
Canucks play-by-play broadcaster John Shorthouse joins the hosts of the Starting Lineup after Vancouver gave up a 7-1 spanking to the Nashville Predators. "You could get sucked into the vortex of just being awful," he says, noting he wasn't happy with his call or the hockey club. As the coach said, the most disappointing part was that dismal third period. "It was a collective surrender."

Luke Fox on the Stanley Cup chances of the Nashville Predators
December 13 2017
The Sportsnet hockey writer breaks down the ways the Nashville Predators are a Cup contender since trading for Kyle Turris and getting the depth at centre they were hungry for. "This is a scary team," he says. It starts in the back, but this is overall a very balanced team that was built to go the distance and the Canucks won't find many weaknesses.

Lions' Ed Hervey on Wally Buono, Johnny Manziel and being an introvert
December 13 2017
The new GM of the BC Lions joins the hosts of the Starting Lineup on Sportsnet 650 to talk about changes to the coaching staff, balancing salary across the roster, and keeping fan attention. An offensive coordinator will be someone who runs the offense, not a long-term play to replace Wally Buono. He has a hard, "No," for bringing in Johnny Manziel and believes in Jonathon Jennings. Plus, he describes himself as a introvert as well as a nice guy.

Injuries put Canucks in especially tough spot since goals already in short supply
December 12 2017
Sportsnet's Dan Murphy breaks down the injury report with the Canucks and can't pin it on any lack of rest or training methods. Sometimes luck is just bad, he says. "The different this year is they are two of Vancouver's top players, two thirds of the top line," plus these will be long-term recoveries for Bo Horvat and Sven Baertschi. He also talks Nikolay Goldobin and Alexander Burmistrov.

Jack Morris is a Cooperstown long-shot, plus Jays will have few answers for Yankees
December 12 2017
Jay Jaffe of Sports Illustrated joins the hosts of the Starting Lineup to talk Cooperstown and the argument for Jack Morris as a Hall of Famer. The "magnificence" of his 10-inning shutout has overshadowed the rest of his career. He was not that special, he says frankly. With Giancarlo Stanton joining the Yankees, the Jays will have a hard time keeping pace. "I don't know where you go find that slugger."

Sam Cosentino on Canucks prospects battling for a World Junior roster spot
December 12 2017
Sportsnet junior hockey analyst Sam Cosentino speculates about the shape of Canada's World Junior roster and which of the three Canucks prospects, Kole Lind, Jonah Gadjovich and Michael DiPietro, might crack in. "There is a good chance two of three," he says, and those will likely be the older players. The battle for roster spots is more wide open than ever for forwards, he says, but defense is locked up. He's also really excited to see Elias Pettersson play for Sweden and compares the skater to Peter Forsberg.

As Giancarlo Stanton lands with Yankees, how can the Blue Jays counter?
December 11 2017
MLB analyst Shi Davidi comments on the New York Yankees major play for Giancarlo Stanton and how he will solidify their already very robust batting order. Jays fans will be wondering what Toronto can do to boost their chances. The answer may be grim. "There is nothing they can do," he says, but you can't jut throw up your hands. "You try to build a team and hope for a good run of health."

Assessing QB changes around NFL, from Carson Wentz to Aaron Rodgers
December 11 2017
NFL analyst with CBS Sports, Jason La Canfora assesses quarterback adjustments across the league and is frank about the limitations of Nick Foles in Philadelphia now that Carson Wentz is out of the Eagles lineup. You simply can't run the same offence, he says. Aaron Rodgers returns to Green Bay, and the Packers have a chance. With these kinds of shake-ups, the entertainment factor is high and the NFC is far more open (and interesting) than the AFC right now.

Chris Daniels: NHL push to get established in Seattle before NBA returns
December 05 2017
NBC Seattle's Chris Daniels joins the hosts of the Starting Lineup to talk about yesterday's momentous civic vote on a downtown centre for both hockey and basketball. Who will be the most likely first anchor tenant? "It's definitely the NHL," he says. The reason Seattle is an attractive market is the regional rivalry with the Cancuks and also because it's key to get in before the Sonics (hopefully, eventually) also return. A hockey club will have to be marketed well and also win.
