Tom Brady 'doesn't look like a tough dude but is a tough dude'
January 19 2018
Jeff Reinebold, BC Lions special team coach and Sky Sports NFL analyst, doesn't see Tom Brady's hand injury (or, "injury") as a serious problem. "He doesn't look like a tough dude, but he's a tough dude." The Jaguars pass defence is exceptional, so Brady will have to adjust more than his grip. The key match-up is Myles Jack and how he's able to contain Rob Gronkowski.

Don Cherry on careers of Willie O'Ree, Wendel Clark, Darcy Tucker, Eric Lindros
January 18 2018
Grapes calls in from Corner Brook, Nfld. before Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada to talk about the pioneering ways of Willie O'Ree, the first black NHLer, and how high costs are affecting minor hockey. Wendel Clark remains "a good ol' farmer guy" and Darcy Tucker is "my type of player." Eric Lindros was the best player in the league but never the same after being hit by Scott Stevens, who'd have been suspended today. "They'd give him a life sentence in San Quentin now."

Larry Stone on what all these coaching changes mean for the Seahawks
January 17 2018
Seattle Times' Larry Stone calls in from south of the border to talk about 67-year-old Pete Carroll and further coaching changes with the Seahawks. After a successful re-build that led to two Super Bowl appearances, they've gone as far as they could with the staff they had. He sees them building around a linebacking core rather than the secondary. Russell Wilson is a free agent after 2019, so they have to cash in now.

He talks prospects from a scouting standpoint, from Jake Virtanen and Nikolay Goldobin to future hopefuls and other picks that were passed over along the way.

Bertuzzi on Ken Holland: Deserves 'unlimited' contract for what he's done in Detroit
January 16 2018
On this Bertuesday with the Starting Lineup, Todd Bertuzzi remembers his Olympic experience at Turin 2006. "Other than getting a participation badge," he says he loved every minute of it, from three to a room to all eating together in a cafeteria among the world's elite athletes. He respects the honour of wearing a Maple Leaf but Olympic gold was never his ambition. "The trophy I was chasing was the Stanley Cup." He grades the Canucks a B, comments on Travis Green and discusses his nephew's first NHL goal. Ken Holland should have a lifetime contract with the Detroit Red Wings until he's ready to leave.

He needed something to do that would get him out of the house but not hitting a bar and possibly still meeting women. So he became an Uber driver. He talks Las Vegas Golden Knights and the players he hated visiting as a player.

Did you pick the Titans to beat the Patriots? Jawn Jang did...
January 15 2018
We're all friends here at SN650. Except when we're picking favourites. Jawn Jang made an out-there prediction about the Tennessee Titans. It turned out to be wrong, but three cheers for putting himself out there, right? "I just want to see a little bit of chaos in New England," he said about a possible upset. "A little bit of anarchy in the most successful franchise in modern history would serve football fans quite well." Steve Darling, an unabashed fan of Tom Brady and the Patriots, had a rebuttal. A rebuttal that made long and short of Jang's arguments.

Is something worse than injuries 'wilting' the Canucks?
January 10 2018
Iain MacIntyre has some sage insight into the fragility of the Canucks given a bad, flukey goal can submarine them. There is something worse than their injuries, and he's alarmed by how much the team "wilted" after the bizarre goal followed by a bad goal. "They left Washington for about 25 minutes." There should be a trade, and he predicts it will be Erik Gudbranson.

"Once you get them at the park, then making sure they have a great time and come back." His future is linked to owner David Braille, who intends to sell. Is Johnny Manziel good for the CFL? He advises everyone to take a step back and look at the positives. He supports the coach and the GM, who deserves "at least two more years to see this through." He talks Alex Ovechkin, Sweden's silver medal toss, and supporting Georgia in the NCAA national championship. Also, he was almost traded to the Coyotes. Instead he went to the Panthers.

Hirsch on Jim Benning: Canucks not only team waiting, weighing management options
January 08 2018
Corey Hirsch joins the Starting Lineup to say there will be coaching and management moves around the league, meaning the Canucks may also be waiting on their own negotiations to see who might be available. "You wait and you weight your options." But he feels Jim Benning deserves a contract extension in Vancouver. Rebuilding is a "huge, huge task," and he's done a good job so far.

Don Cherry on value of Erik Gudbranson, goaltending and Canucks' 'no quit'
January 08 2018
Don Cherry added some more nuance to his comments on Hockey Night In Canada that the Vancouver Canucks and Toronto Maple Leafs should swap Erik Gudbranson and Mitch Marner. In fact, he likes what the Maple Leafs have going and the point he wanted to make is that no team should just give up a stay-at-home defencemen for a draft pick. The Canucks losses have been disheartening and the goaltenders are not stealing games.
