BC Lions' Jennings on Wally Buono, new coaches and his new contract
January 15 2018
BC Lions quarterback Jonathon Jennings joins Sat Shah and Jawn Jang on SN650 to talk about his reaction to the NFL playoffs and that dramatic ending to game between the Vikings and Saints. "You can never quit," he says, "not until the clock runs triple zeroes." He has a new contract in the CFL and a shoulder that's healing. He talks about the challenges of the previous season and coaching changes in B.C. He's "heard nothing but good things" about new offensive coordinator, Jarious Jackson.

January 15 2018

Marcus Williams showed a lot of maturing, owning up to his mistake. "That's football." He talks Case Keenum and what's next for him in the NFC championship round and afterwards. He talks Drew Brees's strong performance, the future of Mike Tomlin in Pittsburgh, and the legacy of Tom Brady.

Did you pick the Titans to beat the Patriots? Jawn Jang did...
January 15 2018
We're all friends here at SN650. Except when we're picking favourites. Jawn Jang made an out-there prediction about the Tennessee Titans. It turned out to be wrong, but three cheers for putting himself out there, right? "I just want to see a little bit of chaos in New England," he said about a possible upset. "A little bit of anarchy in the most successful franchise in modern history would serve football fans quite well." Steve Darling, an unabashed fan of Tom Brady and the Patriots, had a rebuttal. A rebuttal that made long and short of Jang's arguments.

Maple Leafs still a strong destination for Gudbranson, but not for Marner
January 12 2018
Renaud Lavoie, NHL analyst with TVA Sports, talks about potential moves for the rebuilding Vancouver Canucks. The problem right now is a lack of depth since they are not playing badly. He's impressed with prospects playing in the AHL and talks trade potential for Thomas Vanek, Chris Tanev and even Alex Biega. With Erik Gudbranson, the Leafs could work a trade for Connor Brown but there is also possibility he goes to the Tampa Bay Lightning. "You're not doing your job if you're losing UFAs without getting something in return."

QB whisperer: Seahawks need coach able to challenge Russell Wilson
January 12 2018
Gee Scott, the Seahawks analyst with 710 ESPN Seattle, brings his infections energy to The Playbook to talk about coaching changes in Seattle and the failure of the run game despite being prioritized. He expects to see new leadership in an offensive coordinator that can go toe to toe with Russell Wilson. "Darrell Bevell was a very nice guy." The need a "quarterback whisperer" to challenge the QB and help him get even better.

DeRozan one of those rare players who keeps getting better
January 11 2018
Sportsnet's Michael Grange calls in to talk with Satiar Shah and Jawn Jang about the Toronto Raptors and DeMar DeRozan, who keeps on getting better. "It's really rare for players who are already good to continue to take big steps," he says. And this has been his biggest step yet. He talks Cleveland Cavaliers and LeBron James, plus where -- if anywhere -- he might land next. "Certainly looks like he could play at least another five years."

Will the Vikings set the stage to play at home for the Super Bowl?
January 11 2018
Bleacher Report's NFL analyst Mark Schofield previews Week 2 of the playoffs and the joyous struggle of picking between the Minnesota Vikings and New Orleans Saints. Drew Brees shows he's still capable of stepping up. "If the Vikings can get past this one, the path sets up really well for them to get to their home turf for the Super Bowl." The Seahawks under-performed despite their talent and a chance in offense is coming, beginning at the top.

Canucks culture suddenly positive despite years-long losing skid
January 10 2018
Colby Armstrong, an analyst with Sportsnet HockeyCentral, likes watching the Canucks because he really appreciates their work ethic. Give Travis Green credit for inspiring the room. "It's an honest, solid approach." He talks Jim Benning, Elias Pettersson and Brock Boeser (because who isn't?). Evander Kane has "swagger" but also a lot to offer the right club. Winnipeg doesn't deserve to be dissed as a city, but not everyone loves the dark and cold. Besides, the building and fans are "awesome," says the former NHLer. The Vegas Golden Knights are not only winning but also "super fun to watch."

Vikings vs Saints is 'real Super Bowl' with winner going all the way
January 10 2018

Vincent Verhei, the NFL analytics expert with FootballOutsiders.com previews the NFC and AFC contests this weekend and takes on some big questions about o- and d-line match-ups. The Jaguars need Blake Bortles to show up. The "real Super Bowl" could be between the Minnesota Vikings and New Orleans Saints, since he predicts the winner of this game goes all the way.

Judd Brackett, the Canucks director of amateur scouting, talks with Satiar Shah and Jawn Jang about prospects throughout the franchise, working with Jim Benning and finding talent in the college sports system. He looks for character, work ethic and coachability. Adam Gaudette "is very excited about beginning a pro career," he says. "Adam is excited to be a Canuck." Elias Pettersson is strong if slight and has "no fear factor." He also talks Jonah Gadjovich, Olli Juolevi, Jonathan Dahlen, Will Lockwood and Jack Rathbone.

Battle of Alberta still means no trades between Oilers and Flames
January 09 2018
Sportsnet's Mark Spector calls in to talk about the basement-dwelling Edmonton Oilers and if coach Todd McLellan is losing his locker room. "I think it is too late." Although almost everyone picked them to make the playoffs, it's been a tough year. Taylor Hall, for example, had six coaches in six seasons in Edmonton. They need time to build a program. He talks Jesse Puljujarvi, Brent Seabrook and why the Flames are not giving the Oilers any assets that can be used against them.

Will this NFL weekend feature three thrillers and one dud?
January 09 2018

Danny Kelly from TheRinger.com joins Sat Shah and Jawn Jang to look ahead to NFC and AFC matchups this weekend. Surprising no one, the Titans look over-matched against the Patriots. Matt Ryan and Nick Foles square off but they are not the only variable as the Eagles host the favoured Falcons. The Saints have an impressive offence but the Vikings defence is balanced.

Corey Hirsch on stopping Ovechkin, playing Goldobin, trusting Travis Green
January 09 2018
The colour commentator for SN650 calls in from Washington, D.C. to preview the Canucks visit with the Capitals. He expects to see a team that competes but is over-matched. "But I see development, which is good." Against Alex Ovechkin, you need a game plan. Derrick Pouliot can be briefly "lackadaisical" and this leads to costly mistakes. Nikolay Goldobin is building confidence and needs ice time. "He will start to show you little flashes of skill."

Will the Washington Capitals trade for a stronger playoff push?
January 08 2018
Neil Greenberg with the Washington Post previews the Vancouver Canucks visit against the Capitals tomorrow and marvels at Alex Ovechkin's winning battle against Father Time. The team has underachieved for their standards, including Braden Holtby. The Capitals have a threadbare prospects cupboard and are going all-in with their current lineup. In the chance the make a trade to strengthen their playoff push, the options could be Jakub Vrana or Madison Bowey along with backup Philipp Grubauer.

Irfaan Gaffar: Canucks lack confidence and at risk of 'free fall'
January 08 2018
Sportsnet's Irfaan Gaffar jumps into the conversation to discuss the pros and cons of sitting Loui Eriksson. Despite his "awful" contract, management is not scratching a guy pulling in that many millions. The Canucks are barely managing but are not losing because of a lack of effort; the competition is just that much better. Jim Benning knows hockey talent and will be back but perhaps not as GM. He also talks Chris Tanev, OT lineups and NFL wildcard games.

Mina Kimes talks Mariota, Newton, 'awful' Foles, 'phenomenal' Thomas
January 08 2018
ESPN's Mina Kimes joins Satiar Shah and Jawn Jang to talk about Marcus Mariota and how thankful the NFL can be that he pulled of the highlight of highlights and distracted from poor officiating and "the fumble that wasn't." Bringing back Mike Mularkey is not right for the Titans. The Bills lost, and Tyrod Taylor is "done." Nick Foles looks "awful" but the game between the Eagles and Falcons will still be close because of a linebacker like Deion Jones. She talks Cam Newton, Travis Kelce and Michael Thomas.

Canucks' confidence bruised by unreliable goaltending
January 05 2018
Play-by-play commentator for SN650, Brendan Batchelor calls in from Toronto to preview the Canucks visit with the Maple Leafs tomorrow for Hockey Night in Canada. At practice, Brock Boeser was seen skating on both power play units, but that could just be coaches testing scenarios. Since they are missing key elements to injury, "it could be pretty ugly" if the Leafs have their way. Loui Eriksson is too quiet even when healthy. Brandon Sutter is not on the trip but Sven Baertschi is and could be seen as soon as Sunday in Montreal.

Assessing the NHL's UFA market, from Pacioretty to Kane... to Jagr?
January 05 2018

Sportsnet hockey reporter, podcaster and dapper turtleneck-wearer Dimitri Filipovic talks with Sat Shah and Jawn Jang about the UFA market around the NHL, from Max Pacioretty to Evander Kane to Mike Hoffman, a happy medium between those first two and also widely underrated. What would a contender trade for? A player who could stick around for more than one year. Also... speculation about Jaromir Jagr.

January 05 2018

"Suffer for a couple more years" instead of chasing a fool's errand with trades. He talks WJC semi-finals with Elias Pettersson facing the U.S. in Buffalo and then Jonah Gadjovich joins Canada to take on the Czech Republic. Olli Juolevi, though the Fins are eliminated, only got better during the tournament.

What NHLers should make a hypothetical U.S. Olympic roster?
January 04 2018
Emily Kaplan, the NHL reporter for ESPN, joins Satiar Shah and Jawn Jang to talk about projected Olympic rosters should NHLers be going to PyeongChang. Brock Boeser would get a good look but wouldn't make the cut because the team would be remarkably "stacked" this year. Charlie McAvoy also misses the cut because the team's defence would also be so deep.
