Boeser who? Barzal what? Calder rookie race could finish with McAvoy
January 16 2018

Joining Andrew Walker and Dan Riccio, the author of 31 Thoughts Elliotte Friedman is watching the Calder contenders and his forerunner has cycled from Clayton Keller, then Brock Boeser and now the guy is Mathew Barzal but the debate is far from settled. "I still say this -- McAvoy is going to be the interesting one." He may not have the same numbers, but he's a rookie defenceman in the conversation. He describes how a smart GM "tampers" as a form of due diligence, what Canucks fans have to care about, and George Parros getting "thrown a grenade."

David Amber on NHL's over- and under-achievers
January 15 2018
Hockey Night in Canada host David Amber joins Andrew Walker and Dan Riccio on The Program to talk about the Calgary Flames as a championship contender and what help they get with an MVP in net like Mike Smith. The Anaheim Ducks have been their kryptonite but will that change this year? In Ottawa, Montreal and Edmonton, however, the results are less rosy. In Vancouver, expectations were not high to begin with. He also talks Calder contenders.

Brandon Kozun on Olympics: 'It's not just about the hockey. It's so much more'
January 12 2018
Brandon Kozun calls in from Yaroslavl northeast of Moscow to talk with Andrew Walker and Scott Rintoul and describe the extended tryout, of sorts, towards making the men's Olympic team. "It's such a big stage. It's something with so much history and it's the best of the best." Playing in rural Russia, he's enjoyed the KHL but also says it can feel far from home.

Blue Jacket's GM Kekelienen talks Tortorella, Golden Knights and Penguins
January 10 2018
Columbus Blue Jackets GM Jarmo Kekelienen says trade moves are percolating all year long, certainly not just in February. However, "There's a little sigh of relief for about 24 hours after the trade deadline, but the process keeps going." The Pittsburgh Penguins are still the benchmark in the Metropolitan Division. "No one is counting them out." He talks Vegas Golden Knights and what's working under John Tortorella. "He's looking for ways to get better every day."

Friedman on Gudbranson: Teams are calling Canucks but can't say who is 'gung-ho'
January 10 2018
The HNIC analyst with the new podcast Elliotte Friedman calls in to Andrew Walker and Scott Rintoul on SN650 to discuss the latest news around the NHL. The prevailing mood around the Canucks is struggle, constant struggle. But he describes seeing players' friendly attitude. "You can't quit after 40 games," he says, so they're concentrating on playing. Erik Gudbranson may be having the toughest time since he's waiting to learn his fate before the trade deadline. Teams appear to be interested, but it's still unclear which one is "really, gung-ho interested."

Brock Boeser on being first Canucks rookie All-Star in nearly 30 years
January 10 2018
The NHL All-Star says his season has surpassed expectation. "My year so far has gone pretty well," he tells Andrew Walker and Scott Rintoul in an exclusive interview on Sportsnet 650. He learned from T.J. Oshie and balances his emerging stardom with the Canucks slump by knowing how good the team can be. The 20-year-old hasn't been part of a losing streak quite like this but he leans on Chris Tanev and Tomas Vanek. He talks about sitting those first two games of the year.

Mike Tanier: NFL management allows for a low-margin of error
January 08 2018
Mike Tanier, the lead NFL writer for the Bleacher Report, joins Andrew Walker and Scott Rintoul to hash out the wildcard results and Marcus Mariota's ability to put himself on the line to win games despite a few shortfalls. The strength of the New Orleans Saints is that Drew Brees may be their Plan B, which is a very fine Plan B. The Atlanta Falcons coaching staff did the best job of pulling through and preparing.

Is it worth an NHL team tanking for a shot at Rasmus Dahlin?
January 05 2018
Justin Bourne, the head hockey writer for The Athletic, calls in from Toronto to talk about the WJC and why the entertainment factor isn't there this year. For Sweden's Rasmus Dahlin, he doesn't believe in tanking to win a top pick because it's only a one-in-five shot at No. 1. For the Leafs, if the Vancouver Canucks are interested, dispensable players include Jake Gardiner. He doesn't see a move for Timothy Liljegren. Brock Boeser is his front-runner for the Calder.

Seahawks' Luke Willson talk free agency, explains what went wrong for Seattle
January 04 2018
The Seattle Seahawks tight end joins Andrew Walker and Scott Rintoul on Sportsnet 650 to talk about his first time out of the post-season. "It is very odd," he admits. Although it was bleak at the end, he thought the Hawks were going to pull it off. The ineffectiveness is not explained by one thing. Across positions, they weren't clean and they were frequently penalized. The unrestricted free agent hopes he'll be back in Seattle but is also mentally prepared for uncertainty. "It's not an enjoyable process not to have a job."

Rasmus Dahlin 'generational' d-man will elevate any team lucky to get him
January 04 2018
Sportsnet senior hockey writer Chris Johnston joins Andrew Walker and Scott Rintoul to say he hasn't felt less buzz for the WJC than this tournament in Buffalo. "To this point, it's been a massive disappointment," notably in regards to getting butts in seats. It's possible Rasmus Dahlin lives up to the hype and becomes one of the few d-men to go first overall. He will change the fortunes of any team that drafts him. He also talks Leafs and Oilers.

Bieksa on returning with Kesler to face Canucks: 'We make a point to win the game'
January 03 2018
Kevin Bieksa calls in from an airport somewhere in B.C. to talk with Andrew Walker and Scott Rintoul about what explains the success of the expansion Vegas Golden Knights. The Anaheim Duck (and former, 10-year Canuck) defenceman in on a team expected to contend but says they're managing the presser as veterans do. Ryan Miller nabbed a shutout against his former Vancouver team, and this is how returnees such as he and Ryan Kesler like it. "Every time we come back, Kes and I, we make a point to win the game. And when we do, it feels good." They did not study up on Brock Boeser. They focused on their game.

Friedman: Junior players should be on the radar for Olympic hockey teams
January 02 2018
Sportsnet hockey analyst Elliotte Friedman joins Andrew Walker and Scott Rintoul to take the temperature at the WJC and around the NHL. The U.S. and even Canada's Olympic men's hockey teams will be underdogs at the 2018 Winter Games, and he see a shot for junior players to make Olympic rosters. Pittsburgh is heating up, "centre of the Earth hot," and could add a couple play-makers while the Vegas Golden Knights are affecting all future expansion teams.

What Becky Bonner could mean for women in sports leadership
December 28 2017

Howard Beck with the Bleacher Report joins Dan Riccio and Dave Sheldon to talk about his article on Becky Bonner, who, he speculates, could become the first female GM in pro sports. "Until five years ago," he says, "you would have found no women at all" working in executive roles in the league. There is simply more outside-the-box thinking and that bodes well for all forward movement. Scrutiny is "way in excess" of the average man in the same job, he adds. That's a given.
