Canucks' GM on Gudbranson, trade deadline and dealing for draft picks
February 20 2018
Canucks General Manager Jim Benning joins Andrew Walker and Scott Rintoul on Sportsnet 650 to talk about re-signing Erik Gudbranson. "This last month he's really playing the way we envisioned when we traded for him," he says, describing a shut-down d-man that can match up against top lines. He talks about prospects developing in Utica and elsewhere, but says it's too far out to predict who plays on the blue-line next season. The plan before the NHL trade deadline is to add draft picks. Parity around the league is complicating the market. "It could end up being a quieter year than what we think." He won't comment on specific interest in Chris Tanev but says "he's one of our best defenceman."

"We need each other for the growth of the sport, for the good of the sport. Without that in the Olympics, there is no women's hockey in the Olympics. Everybody respects that on both sides of the border." Canada has a winning streak on this stage, which is largely because of preparation. "When you learn how to win, that is very important.

Canucks' Trevor Linden preaches patience: 'Our fans really do see the future'
February 14 2018
Andrew Walker and Scott Rintoul speak with the Canucks president after signing Jim Benning to another three years. Why did it take so long? "It's a fair question," says Linden, "but the most important part is the stability." There wasn't one thing he and the owners needed to see to be convinced. "It's a results-oriented business... and I like what is happening within our organization." Not so much on the ice, which has been "a challenge," but things are changing behind the scenes, in the prospect pool and around the fan base, which is increasingly positive.

Between the Canucks and the Maple Leafs, Toronto has an interest in veteran d-man such as Chris Tanev, that is no secret. What happens next and when it happens, remains to be seen.

The Super Bowl MVP doesn't have to start anywhere to prove himself and is worth a lot to the Eagles as QB No. 2. "This is not a guy with a lot of ego."

Boeser who? Barzal what? Calder rookie race could finish with McAvoy
January 16 2018

Joining Andrew Walker and Dan Riccio, the author of 31 Thoughts Elliotte Friedman is watching the Calder contenders and his forerunner has cycled from Clayton Keller, then Brock Boeser and now the guy is Mathew Barzal but the debate is far from settled. "I still say this -- McAvoy is going to be the interesting one." He may not have the same numbers, but he's a rookie defenceman in the conversation. He describes how a smart GM "tampers" as a form of due diligence, what Canucks fans have to care about, and George Parros getting "thrown a grenade."
