Every month throughout the NHL season, we’ll be updating you on the development of key Maple Leafs prospects with up-to-date stats, videos, and analysis.

There’s a lot more to player development than what’s written on a score sheet, but it’s hard to ignore the results several Maple Leafs prospects have achieved early in the season.

Toronto boasts the AHL’s second leading scorer, two of the top point producers in the CHL, and the top goal-scorer in Sweden. There’s a lot to be desired in goal and on defence, but the Leafs have accumulated some crazy forward depth over the last few drafts.

Here’s a look at some of the team’s more notable performances from the month of November.

AHL

Brendan Leipsic, 22, LW
Drafted: Third round, 89th overall, 2012 (Nashville)
Season to date: 19 GP | 6 G | 17 A | 23 P | +3

Brendan Leipsic continues to pile up points for the Toronto Marlies.

After leading all players with 13 points in October, Leipsic maintained his spot near the top of the AHL leaderboard after picking up another 10 points in November. In 10 games last month, the shifty winger strung together a six-game point streak and was held off the score sheet just once.

As has been the norm for Leipsic this season, he did the bulk of his damage on the power play. Seven of Leipsic’s 10 points last month came with the man advantage, including the helper below, to give him a league-leading 11 power play assists.

Kasperi Kapanen, 20, RW
Drafted: First round, 22nd overall, 2014 (Pittsburgh)
Season to date: 19 GP | 9 G | 8 A | 17 P | +3

It took Kasperi Kapanen only 16 games to accomplish what he did in 44 games last season.

With four goals in November, Kapanen now has nine goals on the year to match his total from his rookie season. He is tied for the team lead with Byron Froese and is two back of the league-leader.

And it’s not just that he’s scoring more, but how he’s scoring them (the second goal in the video below is particularly impressive).

He is just a much more dangerous and confident player with the puck on his stick than he was a year ago.

Andrew Nielsen, 19, LD
Drafted: Third round, 65th overall, 2015
Season to date: 19 GP | 5 G | 8 A | 13 P | -5

Andrew Nielsen came down to earth a bit in his second month of pro hockey after making things look easy out of the gate. That’s not to say he played poorly. With five points (four on the man advantage) he continues to be a key contributor offensively, but he’s struggled at times in his own zone as he adjusts on the fly to the challenges of the pro game.

Still, his five goals are one off the pace among all defenders and his 13 points are good for fourth among all rookie blue-liners.

Andreas Johnsson, 21, RW
Drafted: Seventh round, 202nd overall, 2013
Season to date: 19 GP | 4 G | 4 A | 8 P | +3

Andreas Johnsson matched his production from October with another four-point month in November.

With his goal on Tuesday against Lehigh Valley, Johnsson snapped a 15-game goalless drought that dated back to the second game of the season. The slick forward has the fourth most points among forwards on the Marlies, but he’s still trying to find a level of consistency that allows him to make an impact when the bounces aren’t going his way.

OHL

Jeremy Bracco, 19, RW, Kitchener Rangers
Drafted: Second round, 61st overall, 2015
Season to date: 23 GP | 16 G | 30 A | 46 P | +12

Jeremy Bracco cannot be stopped right now … literally.

Not only did Bracco tear it up again in November with seven goals and 21 points in 11 games, he has yet to be shut out in 23 games this season. His lengthy streak has already surpassed last year’s longest run of 21 games, set by Toronto’s Mitch Marner and Bracco’s former Kitchener teammate Ryan MacInnis.

And while Bracco has always had elite playmaking abilities (see below), he’s become much more effective as a shooter this year and is only five goals back of matching his total from last season.

Bracco also picked up his second player of the week award after registering 10 points over a four-game stretch. He’ll be a lock to make the U.S. world junior squad after being one of the final cuts a year ago.

Nikita Korostelev, 19, RW, Sarnia Sting
Drafted: Seventh round, 185th overall, 2015
Season to date: 25 GP | 15 G | 14 A | 29 P | -5

There was no way Nikita Korostelev was going to maintain his early-season scoring pace, and he predictably cooled off a bit in November.

After starting the month with three goals in his first four games, Korostelev has failed to find the back of the net over his last eight.

The Sarnia winger ended November with three goals and 10 points in 11 games while earning an invitation to Russia’s world junior camp.

J.J. Piccinich, 20, London Knights
Drafted: Fourth round, 103rd overall, 2016
Season to date: 24 GP | 10 G | 19 A | 29 P | +7

J.J. Piccinich doesn’t have the pedigree or potential of some of the team’s more promising prospects, but he has been a key contributor for the London Knights this year.

After being named London’s captain on Nov. 11, Piccinich responded with a two-goal, four-point effort to kick off a string of five straight multi-point games. He went on to finish the month with five goals and 11 assists in 12 games.

His future with the team isn’t hinged on his offensive skill set, however. Piccinich has decent offensive tools, but his greatest assets are a relentless work ethic and strong defensive game — a big reason why coach Dale Hunter chose him to wear the C.

WHL

Adam Brooks, 20, C, Regina Pats
Drafted: Fourth round, 92nd overall, 2016
Season to date: 17 GP | 9 G | 29 A | 38 P | +20

It didn’t take long for Adam Brooks to shoot up the WHL scoring leaders list.

With a ludicrous 26 points in 10 games in November, earning him player of the month honours, Brooks now sits sixth in league scoring despite only playing 17 games. He’s now chugging along at a 2.24 points-per-game clip, which if sustained would be the highest since Hnat Domenichelli’s 2.39 mark with Kamloops in 1995-96.

Like Bracco, Brooks has yet to be held off the score sheet this season. Not surprising when you’re making plays like this:

QMJHL

Martins Dzierkals, 19, RW, Rouyn-Noranda Huskies
Drafted: Third round, 68th overall, 2015
Season to date: 22 GP | 12 G | 15 A | 27 P | +15

November started well for Martins Dzierkals before an ankle injury slowed down the speedy winger.

Dzierkals began the month by recording a point in seven straight games before suffering the injury, returning for a game six days later, and then winding up back on the sidelines for Rouyn-Noranda’s last three contests.

Assuming he’s healthy, the Latvian will get the chance to lead his country at the world juniors.

KHL

Yegor Korshkov, 20, RW, Yaroslavl Lokomotiv
Drafted: Second round, 31st overall, 2016
Season to date: 35 GP | 6 G | 12 A | 18 P | +3

Yegor Korshkov’s numbers don’t jump off the page, but with another three points in November he remains one of the most productive players his age.

The big winger is second among players aged 20 and under in KHL scoring while averaging just 13 minutes of ice time.

Numbers aside, it’s Korshkov’s physical tools that are the most intriguing. His ability in the clip below to hold off the defender while carrying the puck to the net for a scoring chance is impressive for a kid playing against older competition.

Korshkov’s season took an unfortunate turn on Friday. After scoring his sixth goal of the season in the first period, he broke his leg in a collision with another player.

SHL

Carl Grundstrom, 19, RW, Frolunda
Drafted: Second round, 57th overall, 2016
Season to date: 24 GP | 11 G | 2 A | 13 P | +7

Carl Grundstrom is in position to do something no player has ever accomplished in the Swedish Hockey League: Win the goal-scoring title as a teenager. With a pair of two-goal games in November, Grundstrom has increased his season total to 11 for a share of the league lead.

Realistically, there’s almost no chance Grundstrom keeps up this pace — he isn’t your prototypical goal-scorer and is shooting at an unsustainable 20.7 per cent clip.

Maple Leafs fans will get an up-close look at Grundstrom when he suits up for Sweden at the world juniors in Toronto later this month.

NCAA

Joseph Woll, 18, G, Boston College
Drafted: Third round, 62nd overall, 2016
Season to date: 9-4-1 | 2.33 GAA | .922 SV% | 0 SO

Although he cooled off after a spectacular start to his collegiate career, Joe Woll still ranks among the top goaltenders in the NCAA.

Woll sits 10th in the nation in save percentage (.912) after going 5-2-0 with a 2.54 goals against average in November.

The freshman will also get his chance to shine in Toronto, as he will be vying for the starting job on Team USA along with London Knights’ Tyler Parsons and Boston University’s Jake Oettinger.

Dakota Joshua, 20, C, Ohio State University
Drafted: Fifth round, 128th overall, 2014
Season to date: 14 GP | 2 G | 12 A | 14 P | +4

Dakota Joshua has taken a nice step forward in his sophomore campaign at Ohio State.

After scoring five goals and 17 points in 29 games his rookie year, Joshua has been playing at a point-a-game pace for the high-scoring Buckeyes.

A lot of that production came in November, as the big-bodied centre strung together a five-game point streak and finished the month with seven points in six games.

Steve Yeater/AP casey Raptors sound off after controversial loss to Kings Mon, 21 Nov 2016 02:24:38 EST Mon, 21 Nov 2016 08:09:24 EST Mackenzie Liddell Members of the Toronto Raptors sounded off after Sunday’s controversial finish in Sacramento.

]]>
The Toronto Raptors weren’t happy with how things ended in Sunday’s loss against the Sacramento Kings, and rightly so.

With the Raptors trailing by three and 2.4 seconds remaining on the clock, Terrence Ross grabbed a deflected inbound pass and converted a long three-pointer that beat the buzzer and sent the game to overtime.

But upon further review, officials determined that Ross didn’t get the shot off in time because the clock didn’t start when DeMarcus Cousins deflected the ball and overturned the ruling on the floor, handing victory to the Kings.

Raptors forward Patrick Patterson addressed the bizarre ruling after the game on Twitter, while also pointing out another discrepancy with the shot clock.

Patterson wasn’t the only player to voice his displeasure after the game. Injured big man Jared Sullinger also brought attention to the shot clock error, while Ross and coach Dwane Casey spoke to the media about what transpired and the explanation they were given by the referees.

Kyle Lowry, on the other hand, chose to bite his tongue.

The Raptors (8-5) have the option of appealing the outcome of the game, outlined in the rule below.

The last successful protest occurred following a 2008 game between the Atlanta Hawks and Miami Heat. Shaquille O’Neal was disqualified from the game with 51.9 seconds remaining despite only having five fouls after being mistakenly attributed a foul earlier in the contest. As a result, the NBA ruled that the Hawks and Heat would replay the final 51.9 seconds the next time the two teams met, while the Hawks were fined $50,000 due to a violation of league rules by Atlanta’s official scorer.

Unlike the Atlanta-Miami situation the Raptors and Kings don’t play each other again this season, adding even more confusion to an already murky situation.

Every month throughout the NHL season, we’ll be updating you on the development of key Maple Leafs prospects with up-to-date stats, videos, and analysis.

While all eyes are on the future of the Toronto Maple Leafs currently skating with the big club, there are still a number of prospects making noise in the system.

Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, William Nylander, and Morgan Rielly are undoubtedly the most important players for the Maple Leafs in the near future but depth is critical to sustained success in the NHL, and if you can develop it yourself rather than pay for it in free agency, all the better.

So while there is no marquee prospect in the system this year, there is plenty of talent and a number of players who could one day make an impact with the Maple Leafs.

Here’s a look at how some of them have performed in October.

AHL

Brendan Leipsic, 22, LW
Drafted: Third round, 89th overall, 2012 (Nashville)
Season to date: 8 GP | 3 G | 10 A | 13 P | +6

Brendan Leipsic has not only been the best offensive player on the Marlies but also the best in the entire AHL.

The league’s leading scorer with 13 points, Leipsic has been on a tear to start the season with points in six of Toronto’s first seven games, including a four-point performance in the season opener. Here’s a few examples of the play that earned Leipsic AHL player of the month honours for October.

This one didn’t result in a goal, but it’s an impressive heads-up play nonetheless.

Leipsic drew good reviews from Maple Leafs coach Mike Babcock last season, and with his performance so far, it might not be long before he gets another look with the big club.

Kasperi Kapanen, 20, RW
Drafted: First round, 22nd overall, 2014 (Pittsburgh)
Season to date: 8 GP | 4 G | 5 A | 9 P | +3

After a choppy start to his pro career last season, Kasperi Kapanen has taken a big step forward early in his sophomore campaign.

The speedy winger is right up there among the top scorers with four goals and nine points through eight games after finishing with only nine goals and 25 points in 44 games last season. But more importantly, Kapanen looks much more confident in his second season and has been one of the team’s most noticeable players night in and night out.

As a result of his hot start, Kapanen was named the AHL’s first player of the week for 2016-17.

Andrew Nielsen, 19, LD
Drafted: Third round, 65th overall, 2015
Season to date: 8 GP | 3 G | 4 A | 7 P | +4

Andrew Nielsen was one of the more surprising prospects last year when he finished third among WHL defencemen in scoring despite entering the year with few expectations.

He has carried that over to the AHL, where he currently sits tied for second among defencemen in goals and seventh in points while playing on the first pair alongside captain Andrew Campbell.

With a heavy and accurate shot from the point, Nielsen has been particularly effective on the power play, where he has generated five of his seven points.

Travis Dermott, 19, LD
Drafted: Second round, 34th overall, 2015
Season to date: 8 GP | 0 G | 5 A | 5 P | +6

Travis Dermott hasn’t looked out of place during his first taste of pro hockey.

There’s a steep learning curve when making the jump from junior to the AHL, particularly for defencemen, but Dermott hasn’t looked overwhelmed matching up against bigger, faster, and more experienced competition. The early offensive production is just a bonus at this stage.

Unfortunately it looks like Dermott will be sidelined for a little while after leaving last Saturday’s game against Albany with an undisclosed injury.

Andreas Johnsson, 21, RW
Drafted: Seventh round, 202nd overall, 2013
Season to date: 8 GP | 3 G | 1 A | 4 P | +1

Andreas Johnsson’s North American career got off to an unfortunate start last season when he suffered a concussion on a nasty hit in just his second game with the Marlies.

But things have gone much smoother this time around.

The 21-year-old winger got off to a quick start this year with three goals in his first two games, all via the power play. Johnsson’s success with the man advantage isn’t much of a surprise, as he finished second among all players with nine power-play goals in the SHL last season.

Although his production has slowed of late (one assist in his last six games), he’s still been generating chances while adjusting to the nuances of the North American game.

Antoine Bibeau, 22, G
Drafted: Sixth round, 172nd overall, 2013
Season to date: 5-0-2 | 1.64 GAA | .944 SV% | 2 SO

Joining Leipsic and Kapanen, Antoine Bibeau was also recognized by the AHL for his hot start by earning goaltender of the month honours.

After backing up Garrett Sparks in the opener, Bibeau has been red hot since taking over the Marlies crease, posting two shutouts with a .944 save percentage over his first six games.

It’s been a much different start for Bibeau this season after he struggled out of the gate last year.

OHL

Jeremy Bracco, 19, RW, Kitchener Rangers
Drafted: Second round, 61st overall, 2015
Season to date: 13 GP | 9 G | 17 A | 26 P | +3

The Kitchener Rangers have been one of the best teams in the OHL this season, and Jeremy Bracco has been a huge factor.

In his second OHL season, Bracco has emerged as one of the premiere offensive players in the league and sits sixth in scoring with 26 points in 13 games. A big chunk of that production came in a three-goal, five-point night against Guelph.

Bracco hasn’t been held off the score sheet yet this season and has six multi-point games.

Nikita Korostelev, 19, RW, Sarnia Sting
Drafted: Seventh round, 185th overall, 2015
Season to date: 15 GP | 14 G | 9 A | 23 P | -3

Nikita Korostelev’s post-draft year did not go well but he’s been much better to start his fourth season with the Sarnia Sting.

The hard-shooting Russian has 14 goals in his first 15 games, good for third in the league.

And some of them have been absolutely filthy.

QMJHL

Martins Dzierkals, 19, RW, Rouyn-Noranda Huskies
Drafted: Third round, 68th overall, 2015
Season to date: 15 GP | 10 G | 12 A | 22 P | +14

Martins Dzierkals made a strong first impression in the QMJHL last season and he’s picked up where he left off.

With 22 points in 15 games, Dzierkals is one of the offensive leaders for the top-ranked Huskies and, if you’re into that kind of thing, sits fourth in the league in plus-minus.

Latvian Hockey Fans on Twitter

WHL

Adam Brooks, 20, C, Regina Pats
Drafted: Fourth round, 92nd overall, 2016
Season to date: 9 GP | 6 G | 13 A | 19 P | +14

It’s going to be difficult for Adam Brooks to top his league-leading 120-point campaign from last season, but despite missing Regina’s first six games, he’s right on track.

Since returning to the Pats’ lineup Oct. 12, Brooks has produced six goals and 19 points in nine games to rank second in the WHL with 2.11 points per game. In his breakout season a year ago, the Pats captain finished with 1.67 points per game.

The over-age centre is also riding a nine-game point streak to start the year while the juggernaut Pats have won eight of nine since his return.

KHL

Yegor Korshkov, 20, RW, Yaroslavl Lokomotiv
Drafted: Second round, 31st overall, 2016
Season to date: 25 GP | 4 G | 10 A | 14 P | +1

There was a lot of head scratching when the Maple Leafs drafted Yegor Korshkov with the first pick of the second round in June.

But he’s showed a glimpse of why the Leafs coveted him. In October, the rangy Russian winger racked up seven points in 11 games. Despite playing only 13:28 per game on a low-scoring, defence-first team, Korshkov has already surpassed his points total (12) from last season, while his 14 points rank second among KHL players aged 20 and under.

SHL

Carl Grundstrom, 18, RW, Frolunda
Drafted: Second round, 57th overall, 2016
Season to date: 15 GP | 6 G | 1 A | 7 P | +2

The Maple Leafs’ other second-round pick from 2016, Carl Grundstrom, has been scorching hot over the last two weeks.

Grundstrom has five goals and seven points in his last six games, including the first hat trick scored in the SHL this season.

Grundstrom, who is tied for most points among under-20 players in the SHL, is now one goal away from matching his total from last season.

NCAA

J.D. Greenway, 18, LD, University of Wisconsin
Drafted: Third round, 72nd overall, 2016
Season to date: 7 GP | 1 G | 3 A | 4 P | +3

J.D. Greenway is a raw defenceman with a lot of size (6’5″, 210 lbs.), good mobility, and some offensive upside.

And although he’s experienced some common growing pains in his freshman season at Wisconsin, the Maple Leafs’ third-rounder has made a good impression with head coach Tony Granato.

“The D, he’s made a big impact on that blue line, he’s done a lot of things for us,” Granato told USCHO.com after Wisconsin’s win over St. Lawrence last week. “He’s a big body, and I think that alone has really helped us, but he skates well. He’s been really good. You expect young guys to make mistakes and be a little inconsistent, but as the season goes on, we’ll get more and more out of him.”

Joseph Woll, 18, G, Boston College
Drafted: Third round, 62nd overall, 2016
Season to date: 5-2-1 | 1.99 GAA | .933 SV% | 0 SO

Joe Woll had some big pads to to fill at Boston College.

Vancouver Canucks prospect Thatcher Demko was the NCAA’s top goalie last season and provided Boston College with stability between the pipes for three years, but Woll has filled in admirably in relief.

Woll has posted Demko-like numbers, albeit in a very small sample, with a .933 save percentage and 1.99 GAA while allowing two goals or fewer in six of his eight starts.

]]>
Toronto Blue Jays manager John Gibbons is hoping to have a little more balance next season.

Appearing on Prime Time Sports on Sportsnet 590 The Fan Wednesday, the Blue Jays skipper discussed the importance of fielding a balanced lineup and the changes that could be in store for the team this off-season.

“I think it would be beneficial if you could add a couple left-handed bats, and productive bats, not just guys that are out there because they hit left-handed. Guys that can give you a little production, they don’t have to be stars,” said Gibbons. “I think anytime you have a balanced lineup, and you face so many right-handed pitchers, it might make it tougher on the opposing team when they’re trying to line up their bullpen. There’s a lot of benefits to that.”

The Blue Jays were a predominantly right-handed hitting team this season, with Michael Saunders, Ezequiel Carrera, and Ryan Goins the only lefties along with switch-hitters Justin Smoak and Dioner Navarro. With righty power hitters Jose Bautista and Edwin Encarnacion likely to test the open market, and Saunders and Navarro also pending free agents, there is plenty of room for change this off-season.

There are a number of free agents that fit a positional need for the Blue Jays — namely outfielders, a backup catcher and first base/DH — and also bat from the left side of the plate. Josh Reddick, Dexter Fowler, Jon Jay, Nori Aoki, Pedro Alvarez, Adam Lind, Hank Conger and Alex Avila are a few names that theoretically fit the bill.

Along with adding a few more lefties to the lineup, Gibbons also discussed the importance of having some extra speed on the basepaths. Only the Baltimore Orioles and Oakland Athletics stole fewer bases among American League teams than the Blue Jays did in 2016.

“It never hurts to have a little more speed, we’re a slugging team, we weren’t a team that it was real easy to manufacture runs because it was tough for us to steal a base,” said Gibbons. “So you inject a little bit of that and that might help a little bit too. It could be a new look next year, that’s for sure.”

Elaine Thompson/AP seahawks Seahawks considering team-wide protest during anthem Thu, 08 Sep 2016 15:53:04 EDT Thu, 08 Sep 2016 15:54:56 EDT Mackenzie Liddell The Seattle Seahawks are planning to show solidarity with Colin Kaepernick in their home opener.

The Seattle Seahawks are considering showing solidarity with Colin Kaepernick in their home opener against the Miami Dolphins.

According to the Seattle Times, the Seahawks are contemplating a team-wide protest during the national anthem on Sunday.

Seahawks cornerback Jeremy Lane was one of the first athletes to follow Kaepernick’s lead in silent protest against racial injustice and the oppression of minorities in the United States when he sat during “The Star-Spangled Banner” before a pre-season game against the Oakland Raiders.

lane_jeremy

Wide receiver Doug Baldwin and linebacker Bobby Wagner said while nothing has been decided, the team has discussed it as a group and whatever they choose to do “will be a big surprise.”

Baldwin has been a particularly outspoken proponent of Kaepernick on social media and the 49ers quarterback’s right to protest.

Kaepernick’s decision to protest during the anthem has been criticized as being unpatriotic and an insult to the country’s military, but Baldwin, whose father served in the military, says he has been encouraged by the support he has received from veterans.

“That’s more heartening to me than anything is the veterans that have reached out and said that’s what they fought for, that’s what they sacrificed their lives for, is to give people back home under the flag, under this country, the opportunity to stand up or sit for what they believe in,” he told the Seattle Times.

Sunday will mark the 15th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in New York, a fact that is not lost on the Seahawks.

“I think it’s very ironic to me that 15 years ago on Sept. 11 was one of the most devastating times in U.S. history and after that day we were probably the most unified that we have ever been. And today we struggle to see the unity,” Baldwin said.

Colin Kaepernick continues to back up his protest against racial inequality in the United States with his own wallet.

The San Francisco 49ers quarterback, who currently has the top-selling jersey in the NFL, announced on Wednesday that he will donate all the money he receives from jersey sales back into the community. It’s the second time this week Kaepernick has thrown money at the causes he is fighting for, having already announced he will donate the first $1 million he makes this season to organizations that work with communities.

Because merchandise sales are included in the NFL’s revenue sharing program, the money Kaepernick earns will be pooled by all 32 teams and divided among the players.

Kaepernick sparked a controversy when he refused to stand for the national anthem prior to a pre-season game on Aug. 26, saying afterwards, “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of colour.” He continued his protest the following game by taking a knee during the anthem alongside teammate Eric Reid, and said that he will keep sitting until there’s significant change.

Yasiel Puig is on his way back to the majors, according to Andy McCullough of the Los Angeles Times.

Puig has spent the past month in the minors after being demoted to triple-A following a disappointing start to the season in which he struggled on the field and dealt with a nagging hamstring injury.

On Wednesday, the Dodgers pulled the mercurial outfielder back from trade waivers after he was claimed by an unnamed team and will now have to wait until the off-season to revisit a possible trade. Puig is under control through 2018 and is owed $17.4 million over the next two seasons.

The 25-year-old has taken a step back the past two seasons after bursting onto the scene with the Dodgers in 2013. In 81 games in the big-leagues this season, Puig is hitting .260 with only seven home runs, 34 RBI and a .706 OPS after batting .305 with a .894 OPS from 2013-14.

Puig has thrived since his demotion, however, slashing .348/.400/.594 in 19 games in Oklahoma City and still has the potential to be an impact bat for the NL West-leading Dodgers down the stretch.

The Toronto Blue Jays have more reinforcements on the way this week, as manager John Gibbons announced on Tuesday that right fielder Jose Bautista is expected to return from the disabled list on Thursday.

Bautista has been out since Aug. 10 with a left knee sprain he suffered when his cleat got caught in the turf. The injury occurred shortly after Bautista had returned from a toe injury that caused him to miss 30 games. The Blue Jays went 17-13 during Bautista’s first stint on the DL and went 6-4 during his latest absence.

Bautista’s return will further bolster a Blue Jays outfield that got centre fielder Kevin Pillar back from injury on Tuesday, while Ezequiel Carrera returned from the DL last week.

In 80 games this season, Bautista is batting .222 with a .793 OPS to go with 15 home runs and 48 RBI.

The former NFL quarterback will attempt to pursue a career in professional baseball and will host a workout for all 30 MLB teams later this month, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Tebow, who currently works as a broadcaster for ESPN, has been training in Arizona and Los Angeles for nearly a year in a sport he hasn’t played competitively since high school. The soon-to-be 29-year-old was an All-State baseball player in Florida before turning his focus to the gridiron, where he became a Heisman Trophy winner at the University of Florida.

A first-round pick (25th overall) of the Denver Broncos in the 2010 NFL Draft, Tebow played three seasons in the NFL with the Broncos and New York Jets and landed a tryout with the New England Patriots before moving into a career as a college football broadcaster. He attempted one more comeback in the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2015, but was released at the end of training camp.

The Oklahoma City Thunder and star point guard Russell Westbrook have agreed to a three-year contract extension, according to Yahoo! Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski.

The deal is reported to be worth more than $85 million and includes a player option on the third year, allowing Westbrook, who was slated to become a free agent next summer, test the open market in 2018. According to Wojnarowski, Westbrook’s salary will be restructured for next season and increase from $17.8M to a max of $26.5M before rising to $28.5M in 2017-18 and $30.6M in 2018-19.

Extending Westbrook is a major victory for the Thunder after the team lost franchise forward Kevin Durant to the rival Golden State Warriors in free agency earlier this off-season.

Westbrook, a five-time all-star, averaged 23.5 points and a career-high 10.4 assists and 7.8 rebounds per game last season to go along with 18 triple-doubles.

The Toronto Blue Jays recalled right-handed relievers Mike Bolsinger and Danny Barnes ahead of Tuesday’s game against the Houston Astros.

Ryan Goins and Bo Schultz have been sent to triple-A to make room on the 25-man roster.

Bolsinger and Barnes will bolster a Blue Jays bullpen that has been taxed in two straight extra-innings losses to the Astros and Baltimore Orioles. The Blue Jays are in the midst of a 13-game stretch without an off day, which ends Aug. 11.

Acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers at the trade deadline for Jesse Chavez, Bolsinger owns a 6.83 ERA and 1.518 WHIP in 27.2 innings at the major-league level this season.

Barnes, 26, has excelled at triple-A Buffalo since being recalled from double-A New Hampshire, having allowed only one run and five hits with 21 strikeouts and one walk in 17.2 innings. He was drafted by the Blue Jays in the 35th round of the 2010 MLB Draft.

The Toronto Blue Jays have activated right-hander Marco Estrada and left-hander Franklin Morales from the disabled list prior to Friday’s game against the Seattle Mariners.

Left-handed reliever Aaron Loup and utility infielder Andy Burns have been sent to triple-A Buffalo, while right-hander Dustin Antolin has been designated for assignment to make room for Morales on the 40-man roster.

Estrada will take the mound on Friday in the series opener against Seattle. He was placed on the 15-day DL July 6 due to back soreness. The 33-year-old ranks first in the American League in WHIP (0.99), fourth in ERA (2.93) and is holding opponents to a major-league best .173 batting average.

Morales, who signed a one-year deal with Toronto in April, has only appeared in two games for the Blue Jays this season after suffering from shoulder fatigue. The Blue Jays had to either activate or cut Morales by Friday after his 30-day rehab window expired on Thursday.

Loup has struggled in limited use this season, allowing four earned runs in six innings, while Burns is hitless in six at-bats.

Detroit Tigers centre fielder Anthony Gose has been optioned to double-A after being reinstated from the suspended list on Wednesday.

Gose was suspended three days for not showing up for triple-A Toledo’s game on Sunday following a heated exchange with manager Lloyd McClendon on Saturday, after which he cleared out his locker. Gose served the suspension during the all-star break.

“After collectively evaluating the situation in Toledo, we spoke with Anthony and emphasized our organization’s expectations of him,” Tigers general manager Al Avila said in a press release. “Most importantly, Anthony’s transfer to Erie is a move to give him a fresh start to his overall performance as he works his way back to Detroit.”

Gose, 25, began the season as Detroit’s starting centre fielder but was sent to triple-A in May when Cameron Maybin returned from injury. The former Toronto Blue Jays outfielder has struggled badly since joining Toledo, hitting .185 with one home run, 13 RBI and 75 strikeouts in 50 games.

Acquired from the Blue Jays for second baseman Devon Travis in 2014, Gose slashed .247/.315/.363 with seven homers and 33 RBI during his two years in Detroit.

Durant will reportedly announce his decision on Monday after meeting with the Thunder, Warriors, Boston Celtics, Miami Heat, Los Angeles Clippers and San Antonio Spurs this weekend in The Hamptons.

A four-time scoring champ, Durant averaged 28.2 points, 8.2 rebounds and 5.0 assists while shooting 50.5 per cent from the field and 38.7 per cent from three-point range in 72 games last season. The 2014 NBA MVP has spent his entire nine-year career with the Thunder organization after being drafted second overall by the Seattle SuperSonics in 2007.

The Thunder came within one win of reaching the NBA Finals this season but blew a 3-1 lead to the Golden State Warriors in the Western Conference Finals. With Al Horford agreeing to terms with the Boston Celtics on Saturday, Gasol, who turns 36 next week, has emerged as the best big man available on the open market. The Raptors are in need of depth at power forward with Patrick Patterson the only proven player at that position under contract.

After agreeing to a five-year, $139 million deal with all-star DeMar DeRozan, the Raptors don’t have much space remaining under the NBA’s $94 million salary cap and could be priced out of Gasol’s services.

(Simmons speaking here)

Growing up, I always wanted to be a general manager.

I made countless trades in video games and I liked to work the phones in fantasy leagues. But that dream quickly died once I realized that I didn’t have any pro hockey experience, and I didn’t go to law school.

However, when the NHL became national news across North America on Wednesday by officially announcing its expansion plans in Las Vegas, I jumped all over the opportunity to play GM.

Our NHL editor told me to quickly assemble a mini front office of my colleagues, so I turned to NHL contributors Mike Johnston and Mackenzie Liddell to help out. Using the incredibly handy Expansion Tool on General Fanager, we were able to do our own expansion draft and select our roster.

THE RULES:

Based on the reported expansion draft rules, which were clarified last week by Chris Johnston of Sportsnet, the General Fanager tool allowed us to go through the process of protecting players on every team and select one unprotected player from each of the 30 teams to form our new Las Vegas roster.

We tried to be as realistic as possible and account for the salary cap, so the tool helped us indicate which players were automatically protected due to no-movement clauses.

The three of us put our heads together to come up with a few quick rules:

Rule 1) We are performing the exercise as if they were selecting a team this year. Remember the Las Vegas team will do their expansion draft after the 2016-17 season. So we did not include any pending UFAs in our protected lists OR on our Las Vegas roster. So Steven Stamkos, for example, is unprotected and undrafted.

Rule 2) We came up with a few hypothetical trade and buyout scenarios just so teams wouldn’t get screwed over with their protected lists, which included Penguins goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury for example.

Rule 3) We tried to be as realistic as possible, coming up with a balance of experienced scorers, veteran defenceman, youth, upside, and a little bit of sentimental value. Below you’ll see our rationale for the picks.

Reader’s Tip: There will be plenty of moves over the summer that will alter this formula, so don’t get too upset if you don’t agree with any of our choices. The actual Las Vegas roster will likely look much different than this, but what you’ll find below is the type of team fans can expect to see.

With all that in mind, here is our Las Vegas roster and depth chart:

LW C RW
Rick Nash Tyler Bozak James Neal
Patrick Sharp Rickard Rakell Dustin Brown
Jussi Jokinen Luke Glendening Matt Read
Nikolay Kulemin Marko Dano Jason Zucker
Matt Moulson Chris Tierney
Christian Thomas Mikhail Grigorenko
D D
Mark Methot Jack Johnson
Alexei Emelin Adam McQuaid
Ian Cole Carl Gunnarsson
James Wisniewski Jyrki Jokipakka
David Schlemko David Rundblad
G
Ryan Miller
Phillip Grubauer
Kristers Gudlevskis
Laurent Brossoit

Note: If it says UFA beside the player, it means they are a UFA after the 2016-17 season.

FORWARDS:

thumbnail_mock-expansion-draft-forwards (1)

Our rationale: Nash could help sell jerseys right away and we were sure the Rangers, who have many inflated contracts, would be happy to get his salary off the books. Neal, Jokinen, and Sharp were added to provide veteran scoring on short-term deals. Brown has a bad contract but could fill a needed leadership void while Bozak has brief experience playing the No. 1 centre role. It was tough picking him over Joffrey Lupul, who would have loved the Vegas experience. We got some solid grit in Kulemin, and plenty of upside in Rakell, Dano, Grigorenko, and Tierney. The toughest call? Passing on Thomas Vanek in order to pick Jason Zucker, who could help the transition as he grew up in Nevada and knows the area outside of the main strip.

DEFENCEMEN:

thumbnail_mock-expansion-draft-defencemen

Our rationale: The front office was very pleased with the depth we were able to accumulate on defence. Because most teams will likely end up protecting just three blue liners (if a team chooses to protect four defenceman then it means they can only protect four forwards) it resulted in plenty of players slipping into the expansion draft. Johnson and Wisniewski add power-play experience, Jokipakka is an up-and-comer that made Team Finland for the upcoming World Cup while Methot, Emelin, Gunnarsson, Cole and McQuaid are all — at the very least — serviceable NHL contributors that help the team play respectable defence right away.

GOALIES:

thumbnail_mock-expansion-draft-goaliesOur rationale: We wanted an American goalie, so the final debate came down to Ryan Miller or Jimmy Howard. Ideally, Ben Bishop could’ve been the pick but we assumed that either him or Vasilevsky will be moved before the real expansion draft. Tampa is in a similar situation to the Pittsburgh Penguins here. They can’t afford to risk letting one of these goalies go without getting anything in return. Grubauer offers upside as a backup and we have two developmental goalies in Brossoit and Gudlevskis (Tampa’s third goalie) that can play at the AHL level in the mean time and fill in once Miller moves on or gets injured.

Our Final Takeaways:

We kept a running notepad of all the tough decisions and debates we had going through the expansion draft process. Here’s a summary.

1) The Tampa Bay Lightning are going to have a difficult time deciding on who to protect — more difficult than most teams. They have a ton of forwards that garnered consideration for protection and the matter becomes further complicated if they are able to re-sign Steven Stamkos. They would likely love to find new homes for Valtteri Filppula and Ryan Callahan, who both have no-movement clauses in their current deals.

2) Another challenging team to come up with our protected list was the San Jose Sharks. They have between four and six legitimate NHL defenceman and have plenty of quality depth forwards that will lead to some difficult decisions for GM Doug Wilson. The Nashville Predators were in a similar scenario and we chose to protect four defenceman for them, which left a player like James Neal unprotected.

3) On the other hand, it was very difficult to even find 11 players worth protecting for some teams, such as the Arizona Coyotes (remember players with two years of professional experience or less are exempt from the process), Carolina Hurricanes, Vancouver Canucks, New Jersey Devils and Buffalo Sabres.

4) Other teams that will have challenging decisions include the Anaheim Ducks, Colorado Avalanche, Dallas Stars, Minnesota Wild, New York Rangers, Ottawa Senators (who have lots of intriguing forwards and defenceman), and St. Louis Blues.

warriors Warriors the latest record-setting team to choke in playoffs Mon, 20 Jun 2016 16:34:31 EDT Mon, 20 Jun 2016 16:44:27 EDT Mackenzie Liddell The Golden State Warriors failed to turn their record-setting season into a championship trophy, making them the latest among the Big Four sports teams to earn that distinction.

]]>
The 2016 NBA Finals will be remembered as much for the accomplishments of LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers as they will for Golden State’s historic collapse in the wake of a record-setting regular season.

The Warriors aren’t alone in this regard, however. In fact, the teams with the most regular-season wins of all-time in MLB, NHL and NFL all failed to cap their historic seasons with a championship.

As they say, misery loves company.

warriors

2015-16 Golden State Warriors

After beating the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls’ all-time record of 72 wins, it seemed like the Warriors’ coronation as NBA champions was written in stone.

An injury to MVP Steph Curry early in the playoffs and a bout of adversity against the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference Finals only seemed to strengthen the resolve of the Warriors, who looked to be on another level than Cleveland through the first four games of the NBA Finals. Then LeBron took over, Curry went cold, and what once seemed like the inevitable became the improbable as the Cavaliers were crowned NBA champs.

Scottie Pippen was onto something…

brady

2007 New England Patriots

The Patriots seemed well on their way to grabbing a piece of NFL history heading into Super Bowl XLII.

New England became the first team to go undefeated in the regular season since the NFL expanded its schedule to 16 games and had their sights set on the 1972 Miami Dolphins, who are the only team in league history to win the Super Bowl after a perfect season.

A showdown with Eli Manning and the New York Giants in the championship game didn’t look like it was going to derail New England’s bid for history. The Patriots entered the Super Bowl as 12-point favourites over the wild-card Giants and held a narrow lead heading into the final minutes of the game. But a late drive by Manning and David Tyree’s legendary helmet catch helped the Giants overcome the odds and hand the Patriots their first loss of the season.

wings

1995-96 Detroit Red Wings

The 1976-77 Montreal Canadiens are regarded as the best team of all time, but the 1995-96 Red Wings gave them a run for their money.

Detroit won an NHL-record 62 games that season and finished one point shy of that Montreal team’s record of 132 points. Led by a stacked roster that included Hall of Famers Steve Yzerman, Sergei Fedorov, Nicklas Lidstrom and Paul Coffey, the Red Wings entered the playoffs as Stanley Cup front-runners. But after a few uninspiring series against Winnipeg and St. Louis in the first two rounds, the Red Wings met their match in the Western Conference final against the Colorado Avalanche.

The Red Wings would go on to lose that series in six gruelling games, spawning one of the most heated rivalries in hockey.

mariners

2001 Seattle Mariners

The Mariners were an absolute juggernaut in 2001.

They led the majors in both runs scored and fewest runs allowed en route to winning a record-tying 116 games. But much like the other team to win 116 games (the 1906 Chicago Cubs), a championship wasn’t in the cards for the Mariners.

After needing five games to dispatch the Cleveland Indians in the ALDS, the Mariners were handled easily by the New York Yankees in the ALCS, going quietly in five games.

Pat Venditte is no longer just a novelty on the mound.

The Toronto Blue Jays reliever, who is the only active ambidextrous pitcher, will be commemorated by the Staten Island Yankees on Aug. 19 with his very own “bobblearms” bobblehead.

Venditte made his pro debut with short-season A Staten Island in 2008 and left a lasting legacy. In his first appearance with the Yankees, Venditte had a comical showdown with a switch hitter, as the two kept changing sides to try and gain an advantage before the at-bat. After this happened a few more times the umpires’ association adopted the “Venditte Rule,” which determined that the pitcher must declare before the at-bat which hand he will pitch with.

After breaking into the majors with the Oakland Athletics last season, Venditte was claimed off waivers by the Blue Jays in October and was one of the final cuts out of spring training. In 8.2 innings with the Blue Jays this season, Venditte has struck out seven and sports a 5.19 ERA. He was optioned to triple-A Buffalo on Monday.
