MONTMELO, Spain — Fernando Alonso crashed his McLaren and was taken to hospital during Formula One preseason testing on Sunday, before Romain Grosjean steered his Lotus to the fastest lap of the week.
Pastor Maldonado had already put Lotus on the top of the timesheet on Thursday and Saturday, and Grosjean bettered that by setting the fastest time of the four-day test with a lap of 1 minute, 24.067 seconds.
That was after the session was halted when Alonso went off the track at curve three and slammed the right side of his McLaren into the wall.
McLaren said the former two-time champion was "conscious and spoke with the doctors" before being airlifted by helicopter to a nearby hospital for "precautionary checks."
Nico Rosberg of Mercedes clocked the second best lap.
