DETROIT — James Hinchcliffe’s team is hopeful the IndyCar driver can be back by the beginning of August after his crash at Indianapolis.

Hinchcliffe had surgery May 18 after crashing during practice for the Indianapolis 500. The broken wishbone section of the suspension pierced the car’s protective tub and wounded Hinchcliffe’s left leg, causing massive blood loss.

Conor Daly is replacing Hinchcliffe this weekend at Belle Isle for Schmidt Peterson Motorsports. Ric Peterson, a team owner, says he doesn’t know when Hinchcliffe will be back, but the team is hoping he’ll be able to race by Aug. 1.
