HINWIL, Switzerland — Sauber has hired Mark Smith as its new technical director, a role the Englishman has had with four other Formula One teams.

The Swiss team says on Wednesday that Smith will start on July 13, and "fit into the technical committee’s existing structure."

Smith has worked as technical director for Caterham, Force India, Red Bull Racing, and Jordan.

Sauber team principal Monisha Kaltenborn says Smith "is an engineer with a lot of experience in Formula One. Above all, he knows the environment in which privateer teams must work, and the challenges that are there."
