Hank Aaron could be reinstated as major league baseball’s all-time homerun king over Barry Bonds, commissioner Bud Selig told USA Today.
Selig told the newspaper Thursday he is considering striking down Bonds’ 762 homeruns and reinstating Aaron’s 755 as the career benchmark once again.
"This is breaking my heart, I don't mind telling you that," Selig said.
Bonds has been indicted on perjury and obstructing-justice charges and is accused of lying to a federal grand jury in December 2003 about using steroids.
He is scheduled to go on trial March 2.
In addition to the holding the record for most career homeruns, Bonds also holds the single-season record with 73, set in 2002.
After Bonds’ 73 the single-season homerun record holders’ list looks like this:
Mark McGwire, 70 (1998)
Sammy Sosa, 66 (1998)
Mark McGwire, 65 (1999)
Sammy Sosa, 64 (2001)
Sammy Sosa, 63 (1999)
Roger Maris, 61, (1961)
In the 70-year period between 1927 and 1997 only two major league players (Babe Ruth in 1927 and Roger Maris in 1961) hit 60 or more homeruns in a single season.
Since 1997, the feat has been achieved on six separate occasions, by three players (Bonds, Sosa and McGwire).
