If you've grown weary of the artic blast that smacks your face when you retrieve the morning paper, rest easy; opening day is just around the corner. I know this because I've seen the Boys of Summer with my own eyes.
Having just enjoyed an extremely pleasant first day of spring training here in Dunedin, Fla., I thought I'd report back to you on some developments with respect to the Blue Jays. Things I learned include:
- Speaking of Richmond, he let it slip today that he will likely start the "elimination game" at the World Baseball Classic. That means if Canada were to lose to the United States in their opener this Saturday, and then defeat Italy (assuming Italy loses to Venezuela), they'd need a win over the Venezuelans in their third game to avoid elimination. The guess is Saturday's start against the United States goes to Mike Johnson. But, if Canada pulls another upset against the Americans, then look for Richmond to move up and start Canada's second game, likely against Venezuela. In short, look for Richmond to face Venezuela. One way or another.
- Again, it's early, but Jason Lane is swinging a hot bat. If he forces his way into Cito Gaston's plans, it will further muddle the bench picture. Say four backups make the 25-man, opening-day roster. One will be a catcher (Michael Barrett, for example). That leaves the manager picking three of the following: John McDonald, Joe Inglett, Jose Bautista, Kevin Millar, and quite possibly Lane. Someone is bound to be unhappy.
As always, your thoughts on the early portion of spring training are welcome. I'll try and respond to questions and comments as often as I can throughout the season.
