The Jays bullpen came into Friday night's game a tired group. Each and every member pitched the night before in Philadelphia and Cito needed a good seven innings from Brian Tallet to give the relievers a break.

Tallet wasn't outstanding, but he was solid through five innings in giving up just one run. But he wouldn't be coming out to pitch the sixth. Why? Because it was his turn to bat in the top of the inning and Cito opted for a pinch hitter. The game was tied and the go ahead runs were on base with two outs. So instead of Tallet striking out, Joe Inglett popped up the first pitch to end the inning.

After the game Tallet was not a happy camper, and who could blame him? Just exactly who he was mad at is hard to say. I can't say I blame Cito. The way the game was going, you've have to try to get in the go-ahead run.

The Jays also lost Scott Downs when the closer tried his hand at hitting and Friday wasn't the first time a starter came out before he was ready for a pinch hitter.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the National League game but think it's ridiculous that AL teams have to send their pitchers to the plate when many of them haven't picked up a bat in years. It's also a totally different game to manage. Just ask Cito Gaston, who messed up a double switch in Philadelphia.

The time has come to either say good-bye to interleague play or use the DH in all games.
