The Toronto Blue Jays are in trade talks with the Arizona Diamondbacks that would see first basemen Lyle Overbay heading to the dessert in exchange for catcher Chris Snyder, according to a report in Saturday’s Arizona Republic.

Snyder, 28, underwent back surgery in September and is considered expendable due to the emergence last season of Miguel Montero who hit .294 with 16 home runs to wrest away the everyday job.

In 115 games in 2008, Snyder hit .237 with a career-high 16 home runs and 64 RBI.

The Republic reports Snyder is owed at least $11.25 million through 2011 -- $4.75 million in 2010, $5.75 million in 2011 with a $6.75 million option/$750,000 buyout in 2012.

The 33-year-old Overbay will $7 million next season in the final year of his contract.

Overbay hit .265 with a .372 on-base and .466 slugging last season and he was one of the Blue Jays players openly critical of Cito Gaston’s managerial style at the end of the season.
