TORONTO -- Toronto Blue Jays slugger Jose Bautista was named the AL player of the month Thursday.

The outfielder led the league with 12 home runs and 24 RBIs along with a .724 slugger percentage and 72 total bases.

Bautista, who set a Toronto record by leading the league in home runs for a third month of the season, also tied Jose Cruz Jr. and Carlos Delgado for the most franchise homers in August.

Boston Red Sox starter Clay Buchholz was named pitcher of the month.
