No homecoming for 'Johnny Mac'
John McDonald appeared in 549 games with the Blue Jays over seven seasons.
Blue Jays fan favourite John McDonald won't be returning to Toronto next season after coming to terms on a two-year contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks Wednesday.
McDonald spent parts of seven seasons with the Blue Jays and built a reputation as one of the best defensive infielders in the game. He was traded to Arizona along with Aaron Hill on Aug. 23 in exchange for second baseman Kelly Johnson.
The 37-year-old appeared in 549 games with the Blue Jays and hit .243 with 17 home runs and 140 RBIs. Among active shortstops since 1999 (minimum 500 games), McDonald's 56 errors are second-fewest to the Rockies' Troy Tulowitzki's 46, while his 3.14 assists per 9.0 innings ratio is fourth-best.
