NEW YORK — The Houston Astros have reinstated Jesus Guzman from the disabled list.

In a corresponding move Tuesday, the team placed left-handed reliever Darin Downs on the 15-day DL, retroactive to Aug. 15, with a strained muscle on his right side.

Guzman had been sidelined since Aug. 2 because of back spasms. He was expected to arrive from his minor league rehab assignment around game time Tuesday night and was not in the starting lineup against the New York Yankees.

Astros manager Bo Porter says he will use Guzman at first base, in the outfield and as a right-handed bat off the bench. He was hitting .200 with two homers and eight RBIs in 145 at-bats.

Downs is 2-1 with a 4.31 ERA in 40 appearances.
