Which bandwagon should Blue Jays fans jump on during MLB playoffs?

Toronto Blue Jays fans are in some relatively new territory this October. For the first time since 2014, they won’t be watching their club in the post-season.

Fall baseball is really the best kind, and if fans totally ignore the sport, they’ll be missing out. So that leads to an important question: Which bandwagon should Blue Jays supporters jump on during the MLB playoffs?

Of course, most people are fundamentally opposed to the idea of “switching sides.” We get that. But remember: We’re not advocating the purchase of organizational merchandise or tweeting up a storm. Instead, we simply want to find stray fans a team to root for during the chilly, October nights ahead.

Let’s examine the choices Blue Jays fans have to consider, ranking each post-season club out of five train emojis (🚂) …

CLEVELAND INDIANS

The toughest choice. On one hand, this is the team Edwin Encarnacion plays for. Just imagine the beloved former Blue Jay walking the parrot in the World Series. Conversely, this is also the club that eliminated Toronto from the post-season last year, celebrating heartily in the visitors’ clubhouse at Rogers Centre.

LOS ANGELES DODGERS

The Dodgers haven’t won the World Series since 1988, meaning supporters in L.A. have endured a championship drought even longer than the Rogers Centre faithful. That’s a reason to root for California’s Boys In Blue. Another reason? Fans on the East Coast don’t get to watch Clayton Kershaw nearly enough.

Former Blue Jays Brandon Morrow and Alex Anthopoulos add to the intrigue in Los Angeles.

NEW YORK YANKEES

The current iteration of the Bronx Bombers is far from the Evil Empire that tortured the Blue Jays for years. Instead, this young, hard-nosed, fun-loving bunch is a joy to behold.

I can sense the eye rolling.

Who am I kidding. If you’re a Blue Jays fan, you’re not having any part of this conversation.

CHICAGO CUBS

Joe Maddon’s team perfectly balances on-field exuberance with a hard-nosed style. But you know what, they won it all last year, so forget them.

BOSTON RED SOX

I won’t even waste my time here.

WASHINGTON NATIONALS

This team has it all. Dominant pitching led by Max Scherzer. A generational star in Bryce Harper. And terrible post-season memories that they’re looking to expunge. You’d be well served to jump on the bandwagon of this World Series favourite right now.

If you do root for the Nationals, keep an eye on Washington’s bench. Longtime Blue Jay Adam Lind hit .356 with four home runs as a pinch hitter this year.

MINNESOTA TWINS

The ultimate underdog. Sellers in July, these Twins somehow became the first team to ever follow a 100-loss season with a playoff berth thanks in part to manager Paul Molitor, the Blue Jays’ 1993 World Series MVP. They’re not especially good, barely emerging from a muddled AL to grab the second wild card spot. Watching Minny will make Blue Jays fans uneasy because the It-Could-Have-Been-Us feeling will be nauseating.

ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS

Toronto fans might not be too familiar with the desert crew. And that might be a reason to latch on to the D-backs. They’ve got a surgeon on the mound in Zack Greinke and a talented offence that boasts two of baseball’s best right-handed hitters in Paul Goldschmidt and J.D. Martinez. If you decide to back this club, though, load up on the TUMS as their bullpen could have some shaky moments.

HOUSTON ASTROS

If you lend your support to the Astros, you won’t be alone. Many across North America will be cheering for this club to succeed, if only to bring some sense of joy to those in Texas who’ve been affected by the destruction caused by Hurricane Harvey.

COLORADO ROCKIES

While any team can surprise, the Rockies’ young starting pitching doesn’t inspire much confidence. Your best bet is to stick with some of the teams mentioned above.
