Bautista, Martin selected as all-star reserves

Toronto Blue Jays slugger Jose Bautista comments on being named to the MLB All-Star Game and the selection of third baseman Josh Donaldson.

The Toronto Blue Jays now have three 2015 all-stars.

Just a day after Josh Donaldson was officially voted in as the starting third baseman for the American League, catcher Russell Martin and right fielder Jose Bautista were named as all-star reserves on Monday night.

Martin has largely exceeded expectations in his first year with the Blue Jays, batting .256/.345/.476 with 12 home runs and 39 RBI, after joining the club as a free agent this past winter. The 32-year-old, who will be making his fourth all-star appearance, leads all American League catchers in wins above replacement (WAR), per FanGraphs, and is widely considered to be one of the best defensive players at his position.

Bautista, 34. will be making his sixth career all-star appearance. Entering Monday night’s game, the Blue Jays right fielder is hitting .246/.397/.520 with 17 home runs and 57 RBI in 330 plate appearances.

The 2015 MLB all-star game takes place on July 14 at Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati.
