Blue Jays designate Thole for assignment after Navarro reports

Blue Jays analyst Joe Siddall discusses the news that Josh Thole will be DFA'd to make room for Dioner Navarro on the roster, also touches on whether he expects Navarro to go back to catching Marco Estrada.

The Toronto Blue Jays adjusted their catcher situation on Monday, designating Josh Thole for assignment once Dioner Navarro reported to the club.

Thole, 29, is out of options and could return to the Blue Jays when rosters expand later in the week if he clears waivers.

The Blue Jays acquired Navarro on Friday evening in a trade with the Chicago White Sox to provide another catching option for Toronto and a switch-hitting batter off the bench.

Thole, who is primarily used to catch knuckleballer R.A. Dickey, has had a tough season at the plate, hitting .158/.246/.211 with one home run in 47 games.

Navarro is not in the Blue Jays’ starting lineup for Monday’s game against the Baltimore Orioles but is an option for the club off the bench.
