Blue Jays executives LaCava, Brown drawing interest

Current Blue Jays president Paul Beeston joined Prime Time Sports to discuss his replacement at the end of the season Mark Shapiro and why he believes the Indians president is the perfect choice for the job in Toronto.

ATLANTA — The Blue Jays are playing some of their best baseball in decades, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that rival teams with GM openings have interest in hiring some of Toronto’s top executives.

The Los Angeles Angels interviewed Blue Jays VP of baseball operations and assistant GM Tony LaCava, while the Seattle Mariners plan to interview special assistant Dana Brown, an industry source told Sportsnet, confirming a report from ESPN’s Buster Olney.

LaCava has been viewed as a GM candidate for years, and was even offered the chance to become Baltimore’s GM in 2011. He declined, choosing instead to remain in Toronto, where he has worked since 2002.

Brown has also been considered for GM openings before. The former Washington Nationals scouting director interviewed for the Mets’ GM position in 2010.

The Mariners, Angels, Boston Red Sox, Milwaukee Brewers, Philadelphia Phillies and Miami Marlins are all without permanent GMs.

Meanwhile, Blue Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos does not have a contract beyond October of 2015, so he will need a new deal if he is to stay in place when Mark Shapiro becomes team president following the season.
