Blue Jays hit the road as underdogs in series opener vs. Yankees

Mookie Betts drives in eight of Boston’s 15 runs as the Red Sox sweep the Jays and hand them their fourth straight loss.

The Toronto Blue Jays will try to put the brakes on a four-game losing streak when they travel to New York on Monday for the first of three dates with the Yankees as +115 underdogs on the MLB betting lines at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com.

Toronto limped out of town after getting swept in a three-game weekend set with division-leading Boston at Rogers Centre. It was capped by a devastating 15-1 loss as -112 favourites on Sunday that dropped them to seven games below .500 and 9.5 games back of the Red Sox going into Monday night’s Blue Jays versus Yankees betting matchup at Yankee Stadium.

A solid 14-7 run temporarily lifted the Blue Jays back into the hunt in the AL East, with the club climbing to within five games of first place as recently as June 20. However, a prolonged offensive slump has contributed to a 5-11 run, during which the club has tallied consecutive wins on just one occasion.

Aside from J.A. Happ’s strong outing in Thursday’s 2-0 loss to Baltimore as -190 chalk, there has been little for Blue Jays fans to cheer about during the club’s current swoon. The Blue Jays have been outscored by a 31-6 margin over their past four games, connecting on just 20 hits, and have allowed an average of 5.7 runs per game over their past 16 outings.

The Blue Jays take on a Yankees squad that has also struggled, losing 14 of its past 19 games to fall out of top spot in the AL East standings.

The Yankees return home after producing mixed results on a seven-game road trip. New York split a four-game set with Chicago, but outscored the White Sox by a 24-16 margin during the series, and followed up with a decisive 13-4 win as a +160 underdog in the opener of a weekend series with Houston.

The Astros quickly rebounded to claim a 7-6 win on Saturday, and handed the narrowly favoured Yankees a lopsided 8-1 loss as slim -108 chalk on Sunday.

The Yankees have enjoyed success in recent dates with Toronto. The two clubs split a four-game set at Rogers Centre in early June, but the Blue Jays have been dominated in their past two trips to the Bronx, dropping five of six according to the OddsShark MLB Database.

A bright spot for the Blue Jays has been their offensive production at Yankee Stadium, where the club has averaged 5.75 runs over their past eight outings, powering a 6-2 run for the OVER in totals betting in that span.
