Blue Jays’ Marcus Stroman wins Gold Glove

TORONTO – Marcus Stroman won the first Gold Glove of his career Tuesday night, beating out Boston Red Sox ace Chris Sale and Tampa Bay Rays right-hander Alex Cobb for the defensive honour.

The award caps a strong season for the Toronto Blue Jays right-hander, during which he went 13-9 with a 3.09 earned-run average in 201 innings over 33 starts. He joins R.A. Dickey (2013) as the club’s only pitchers to win a Gold Glove.

Dickey is also the last Blue Jays pitcher to win the award as the top defender at his position.

Teammate Kevin Pillar once again missed out on the prize for centre-fielders, finishing a runner-up to winner Byron Buxton of the Minnesota Twins.

Vernon Wells is the last Blue Jays position player to win a Gold Glove, bagging three straight from 2004-06.
