Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Melky Cabrera has changed agents, according to an industry source. The 29-year-old is now a client of The Legacy Agency instead of ACES.
The switch, which was first reported by the Sports Business Journal, took place within the last week. The Legacy Agency represents prominent MLB players including Blue Jays shortstop Jose Reyes and free agent left-hander Johan Santana. Meanwhile, ACES has a deep stable of clients including New York Mets third baseman David Wright and Boston Red Sox left-hander Jon Lester.
Cabrera signed a two-year, $16 million contract with the Blue Jays before the 2013 season, but struggled during his first campaign in Toronto. He battled leg injuries throughout the year, then had a benign tumour removed from his spine on August 30.
Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos has said that he intends to enter the 2014 season with Cabrera as the team’s starting left fielder. The Blue Jays hope he can improve on the .279/.322/.360 batting line he posted in 2013 while re-gaining mobility on defence.
