Blue Jays’ Pearce joins triple-A Bisons, likely to return this weekend

MLB insider Jon Paul Morosi says the rental market for pitching is a little better than he suspected, and the Blue Jays should try take advantage of it.

Toronto Blue Jays utility man Steve Pearce has joined the triple-A Buffalo Bisons to continue his rehab assignment as he works his way back from a calf strain.

Pearce is expected to return to the Blue Jays this weekend, according to manager John Gibbons.

Pearce was placed on the disabled list on May 15. He began his rehab assignment at double-A New Hampshire, going 0-for-15 in four games with the Fisher Cats.

Through 27 games with Toronto, the 34-year-old has slashed .205/.256/.373 with four home runs and 10 RBI.

The Blue Jays signed Pearce due in part to his versatility, and he figures to see time at multiple positions upon his return. He has logged the vast majority of his innings as an outfielder in 2017, but an injury to Devon Travis opens up the possibility for Pearce to play some second base.
