The Toronto Blue Jays continue to be plagued by injuries ahead of the 2015 season.
Having already lost Marcus Stroman, Kevin Pillar, and Michael Saunders in the first few weeks of spring training, infielder Ramon Santiago went down with a fractured right clavicle on Sunday.
Santiago suffered the injury while making a diving catch in shallow centre field during the Blue Jays’ 10-5 win over the Atlanta Braves. There is no current timetable for his return to baseball activities.
Santiago was invited to spring training as a non-roster player, but figured to be in contention for a backup job in the Blue Jays’ infield. The 35-year-old appeared in 75 games with the Cincinnati Reds in 2014 in a utility role. He hit .246/.343/.324 with two home runs and 17 RBI.
Competition for the Blue Jays’ starting second baseman job is now left to Maicer Izturis, Ryan Goins, and Devon Travis with Steve Tolleson and Munenori Kawasaki also in the mix.
