Blue Jays select right-hander Biagini in Rule 5 draft

Hazel Mae, Shi Davidi and Ben Nicholson-Smith give us the 411 on Joe Biagini, the pitcher claimed by the Blue Jays from the Giants via Rule 5 Draft.

The Toronto Blue Jays selected right-hander Joe Biagini from the San Francisco Giants’ system in the Rule 5 draft on Thursday.

If the Blue Jays want to keep Biagini, he’ll have to stay on the team’s roster all season, or else he’ll have to return to the Giants’ organization. Toronto could also work out a trade if it wants to keep him.

Biagini, 25, spent last season with the double-A Richmond Flying Squirrels, going 10-7 with a 2.42 ERA, 84 strikeouts and 34 walks in 130.1 innings pitched.

The Blue Jays passed on their second pick as well as the triple-A and double-A phase of the Rule 5 draft.
