The Toronto Blue Jays announced Sunday that they have signed catcher Ramon Hernandez and assigned him to triple-A Buffalo.
Hernandez, 37, began the 2013 season with the Los Angeles Dodgers and hit .208 with three home runs and six RBIs in 17 games. He was designated for assignment by Los Angeles on June 14 and released on June 22.
Hernandez has played 15 seasons in the majors with Oakland, San Diego, Baltimore, Cincinnati, Colorado and Los Angeles. In 1,526 career games, Hernandez has hit .263 with 169 home runs and 757 RBIs. A 2003 AL all-star while with the Athletics, he is second among all active catchers with 1,447 games played.
He has ranked in the top four in the AL in assists for a catcher six times, including leading the league in 2001 and 2003.
