The Blue Jays have called for reinforcements should Brett Lawrie’s calf injury keep him out of the lineup.
On Thursday the club recalled infielder/catcher Yan Gomes from the triple-A Las Vegas 51s and returned right-handed releiver Sam Dyson back to double-A New Hampshire.
Lawrie injured his calf during Wednesday’s 6-0 loss to the New York Yankees after falling into a camera bay while attempting to catch a foul ball. Post-game X-rays were negative and the club has listed him as a day-to-day.
The 25-year-old Gomes — the first Brazilian to play in Major League Baseball — appeared in 14 games with Toronto earlier this season batting .211/.273/.474/.746 with three home runs and eight RBIs in 38 at-bats.
In 65 games with the triple-A Las Vegas 51s of the Pacific Coast League, Gomes has posted a line of .340/.392/.584/.976 with 11 home runs and 47 RBIs.
Dyson returns to New Hampshire after allowing three runs in 0.2 innings with Toronto.
