Jay Bruce hit his first home run of the spring, Jason Marquis pitched three perfect innings and the Cincinnati Reds beat the Seattle Mariners 10-1 Sunday.
Bruce has a hit in all four of his games this spring. He’s trying to bounce back from a season in which he batted .217 with 18 home runs and 66 RBIs — he had averaged over 30 homers and 100 RBIs in his previous three years.
Marquis struck out three. The veteran is competing for one of the two open spots in the Cincinnati rotation.
J.A. Happ allowed a two-run homer to Donald Lutz in his first outing this spring.
Austin Jackson hit an RBI double for Seattle. Willie Bloomquist, coming back from a fractured knee, was 0 for 3 in his first game.
Mariners closer Fernando Rodney walked one and struck out one in a scoreless inning. Rodney set a team record and led the majors with 48 saves last year.
