CINCINNATI — The St. Louis Cardinals have activated infielder Jhonny Peralta off the disabled list. He was in the lineup at third base for Tuesday’s opener of a three-game series against the Cincinnati Reds.

Peralta had surgery to repair a damaged ligament in his left thumb in March. He played in 155 games last season and batted .275 with 17 homers and 71 RBIs.

The Cardinals optioned second baseman Kolten Wong to Triple-A Memphis on Sunday to open a roster spot. Wong batted .222 with one homer and five RBIs in 49 games, including 35 starts.

Matt Carpenter will move to second base, with Peralta becoming the primary third baseman. Rookie Aledmys Diaz is playing shortstop.
