Cubs release fan favourite infielder Munenori Kawasaki

MLB insider Jon Paul Morosi explains why he's a bit concerned about Roberto Osuna’s lack of work, and lack of performance so far this spring, given his arm history and his young age.

The Chicago Cubs released infielder Munenori Kawasaki on Tuesday, according to several reports.

The move opens the door for Kawasaki to seek a major-league job with another organization, but if that doesn’t happen the Cubs reportedly would like to bring the fan favourite back into the fold as a minor-league depth option.

Kawasaki played in 14 games for the Cubs last season, collecting seven hits in 21 at-bats. The 35-year-old was not on the post-season roster, but did accompany the team during its run to a World Series championship.

Prior to playing in Chicago, Kawasaki spent parts of three seasons in Toronto, where he grew to become adored by Blue Jays fans for his colourful antics.
