The Chicago Cubs released infielder Munenori Kawasaki on Tuesday, according to several reports.
The move opens the door for Kawasaki to seek a major-league job with another organization, but if that doesn’t happen the Cubs reportedly would like to bring the fan favourite back into the fold as a minor-league depth option.
Kawasaki played in 14 games for the Cubs last season, collecting seven hits in 21 at-bats. The 35-year-old was not on the post-season roster, but did accompany the team during its run to a World Series championship.
Prior to playing in Chicago, Kawasaki spent parts of three seasons in Toronto, where he grew to become adored by Blue Jays fans for his colourful antics.
