At just 28 years old, Colby Rasmus could be rounding the bases on his MLB career.
In an interview with the St. Louis Dispatch the former Blue Jays centre fielder admitted that he plans on playing for only four more seasons, and suggested his time in Toronto is partly to blame.
“I’m getting a little older now,” Rasmus told the Dispatch’s Rick Hummel. “I’ve been taking a beating on this body. I’m a lot older than I used to be. Playing on that turf in Toronto was pretty tough. It has a nice slab of concrete underneath and I was diving on it. I didn’t baby myself and take it easy.”
“It’s a tough game,” said Rasmus. “A lot of stuff goes on. I haven’t got much more in me.”
Rasmus had a tough year with the Blue Jays in 2014. After a career year in 2013 in which he hit .276 with 22 home runs and an .840 OPS, Rasmus regressed across the board in 2014 before eventually being relegated to the bench for the final month of the season. He also missed a month with a hamstring injury.
Acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals in 2011, Rasmus never fulfilled his billing as a potential five-tool star during his tenure in Toronto. In 408 games with the Blue Jays, Rasmus hit .234/.295/.433 with 116 home runs and 194 RBI along with 447 strike outs.
The 28-year-old Georgia native signed a one-year, $8-million contract with the Houston Astros in January.
