Hayhurst talks e-book, Blue Jays project

There is no such thing as an off-season for Dirk Hayhurst.

The author, broadcaster and former major league pitcher says he has been a busy man again this winter with the release of his new e-book, Wild Pitches, a companion to last year’s New York Times best seller, Out Of My League.

During a recent phone chat with Hayhurst — which you can listen to below — the 31-year-old said the 120-page e-book expands on the original story in Out of My League but with new chapters, journal entries and dozens of photos.

“There’s fun stories, pranks and other stuff from the baseball world that just make my life, my pathetic life in baseball, more fun for people to read like dressing up as a Hooters girl for my hazing,” says Hayhurst.

During the chat, Hayhurst revealed that he is currently putting the finishing touches on another book, tentatively titled, Bigger Than the Game, which will be released in 2014. That book will focus on his time spent with the Toronto Blue Jays as he re-habbed from an arm injury in 2010.

“It’s an honest recitation of my life injured as a Blue Jay,” says Hayhurst. “It’s not a feel-good love in about the Blue Jays, but it’s not hard on them either. It’s just honest. I think that’s going to be a big eye-opener.”

Also in the works is a book on Hayhurst’s time in 2011 with the triple-A Durham Bulls in the Tampa Bay Rays system, a project he gave us a sneak peek into recently via his Twitter account:

In addition to talking about Wild Pitches and the tentatively titled, Bigger Than the Game, Hayhurst also delved into his writing process and why he believes his style would anger college writing professors.

“I’m sure there’s a way to do this correctly and I’m confident I’m not doing it.”
