The Home Run Derby is perhaps MLB all-star weekend’s signature event; who doesn’t love watching sluggers sock a few dingers?
Various greats have come and gone throughout the years, leaving their mark on the event, and their names in the record books.
Courtesy the folks at Sportsnet Stats, here are some of the Home Run Derby’s top performers in history:
As you can see, Chicago’s Todd Frazier has hit 10 more home runs in the competition’s history than second-place Prince Fielder.
Giancarlo Stanton, who will be attempting to become the Derby’s third back-to-back champion (joining Ken Griffey Jr. and Yoenis Cespedes), can pass Frazier with 31 home runs in this year’s event.
How feasible is that? Well, last year, Stanton socked 61 home runs in all, the most ever recorded in a single competition. Those home runs averaged a distance of 446 feet, which is 27,187 feet in total.
Josh Hamilton in 2008 set the record for most home runs in a single round with an astonishing 28.
Stanton will also be looking to become the third player to win a Home Run Derby in his home ballpark, joining Ryne Sandberg (1990) and Frazier (2015).
