Jays claim Weber, move Santos to 60-day DL

Weber, 28, has made three relief appearances for the San Diego Padres this season, posting a 2.00 ERA over nine innings pitched.

TORONTO — The Toronto Blue Jays claimed right-hander Thad Weber off waivers on Sunday from the San Diego Padres.

Toronto optioned the 28-year-old to triple-A Buffalo and made room on the 40-man roster by transferring oft-injured right-hander Sergio Santos to the 60-day disabled list.

Weber has made three relief appearances for the Padres this season, posting a 2.00 earned-run average over nine innings pitched.

He made six starts last season with triple-A Tucson of the PCL and posted a 4-1 record with a 3.93 ERA. The Nebraska native also appeared in two games for the Detroit Tigers.

Santos injured the right triceps in his throwing arm, just above his elbow. He was placed on the 15-day in mid-April and has only appeared in 11 games for Toronto since joining the team prior to the 2012 season.
