Maicer Izturis will require surgery to repair a complete tear of his lateral collateral ligament after an MRI conducted Sunday revealed the injury, the team announced on Monday.
He slipped walking down the visiting dugout steps in the first inning of the Toronto Blue Jays’ 11-3 thumping of the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday.
“I felt it pop twice and now I feel pain,” said Izturis, who’s never had any knee problems before. “I’m worried about it.”
Typical recovery time for an LCL repair is approximately 4-6 months. Izturis will seek a second opinion prior to scheduling surgery.
The 33-year-old is batting .286 in 11 games this season, collecting multi-hit games in four of his first five contests.
