SAN DIEGO – The Toronto Blue Jays are turning to the trade market as they look to upgrade their bullpen.
While GM Alex Anthopoulos continues to keep tabs on free agent arms, he’s surveying the trade market with renewed focus.
“We’re probably turning our attention a little bit more to trades right now in terms of the relievers,” he said. “It’s not to say that’s how we ultimately end up, but I’d say we’re just a little bit more on that right now.”
The Blue Jays could trade Dioner Navarro for relief, but otherwise they’d prefer to keep their big league roster together while retaining their MLB-ready pitching. That means lower-level prospects are in play as Anthopoulos engages other teams.
Relievers Luke Gregerson and Pat Neshek agreed to terms with the Houston Astros early Wednesday, and Anthopoulos wasn’t surprised by the moves.
The Blue Jays aren’t close to completing any deals and it’s looking like they’ll leave the Winter Meetings without having made a major addition.
