Jays stand pat as trade deadline passes

Casey Janssen, Emilio Bonifacio and Darren Oliver can breathe easy. The Toronto Blue Jays stood pat Wednesday, electing not to make moves as the MLB non-waiver trade deadline passed.

Despite the quiet deadline, the Blue Jays did have trade discussions, inquiring on players including Howie Kendrick of the Los Angeles Angels.

General manager Alex Anthopoulos said last week that he would consider infield upgrades and listen to offers on Toronto’s many relievers.

But as Jake Peavy, Ian Kennedy and Jesse Crain changed teams, the Blue Jays stayed quiet.

The Blue Jays aren’t necessarily done making moves, though. They can trade players in August by first exposing them to revocable waivers.

In general, high-salaried players clear waivers in August. For example, Adrian Gonzalez and Josh Beckett were traded from the Boston Red Sox to the Los Angeles Dodgers last summer.

Though the Blue Jays acquired J.A. Happ leading up to last summer’s trade deadline, they did not make blockbuster moves.
