Ricky Romero is nearing a deal with the San Francisco Giants, an industry source told Sportsnet.

An agreement could be completed as soon as Monday, at which point the defending World Series champions would likely assign Romero to extended spring training.

The Toronto Blue Jays released Romero on April 25 after an up-and-down Jays career that saw him earn an all-star berth before losing his effectiveness on the mound. The Blue Jays selected the left-hander with the sixth overall pick of the 2005 draft and he was a rotation mainstay within four years. By 2011 he was an all-star, but he has struggled ever since.

The 30-year-old last pitched at the big league level in 2013, and he’s currently on his way back from off-season knee surgery.

Bob Elliott of the Toronto Sun first reported that a deal was likely.
