Miguel Cabrera or Mike Trout?
The season-long debate finally comes to an end when MLB announces the MVP award winners on Thursday.
Trout put up unprecedented numbers in his first full season with the Los Angeles Angels, leading the league in WAR. He didn’t win a Gold Glove but was listed as a nominee.
While Trout certainly has a strong case, Cabrera became the first player since 1967 to win the Triple Crown. Cabrera’s Tigers won the AL Central division after a bit of a rocky start while Trout’s Angels were unable to land one of the four playoff spots in the AL.
The sabremetrics guys seem to prefer Trout, who despite Cabrera’s Triple Crown had more impressive metrics across the board. It remains to be seen whether Cabrera’s inconsistent defence could serve as a liability in comparison to the defensively-stout Trout.
Trout would become the third rookie to win the MVP since Ichiro Suzuki in 2001. The other was Fred Lynn in 1975
While Trout and Cabrera are the clear top candidates in the AL, there is a strong group of competition in the NL where there is a bevy of worthy winners for the MVP award.
