MLB Power Rankings: Which rookies are shining?

Watch as Kris Bryant of the Chicago Cubs hits a home run estimated at 495 feet off the scoreboard at Wrigley Field.

It’s the year of the rookie in Major League Baseball.

Between Carlos Correa, Kris Bryant, Roberto Osuna, and Joc Pederson, there could even be a handful of first-year players playing prominent roles in the post-season.

And while the aforementioned players are contributing to the playoff race, many teams are focused on building for the future and seeing their young players develop at the major-league level as the rosters expand for September.

It is incredible how much quality young talent there is around the league.

So in this week’s edition of the MLB Power Rankings, we focused on one rookie per team that has caught our eye this season.

See where your team ranks below.

The Cardinals keep finding quality young talent. The latest? 24-year-old outfielder Stephen Piscotty, who’s hit .329 with a .890 OPS and four home runs.

2

Joc Pederson’s production has dipped in the second half, but the Dodgers still have an impressive youngster in infield prospect Corey Seager, batting .360/.429/.520 in his first 28 MLB plate appearances.

5
3

He’s hardly a typical rookie, but 29-year-old Brazilian Paulo Orlando has two home runs, eight doubles, and a .808 OPS since August 9.

3
4

Where would the Blue Jays be without the emergence of 20-year-old closer Roberto Osuna? Since the all-star break, Osuna has a dazzling 1.74 ERA with 12 saves and 24 strikeouts in 20.2 innings.

2
5

It speaks volumes about the Cubs’ development that we could’ve listed Kris Bryant, Kyle Schwarber, or Addison Russell here, but we have to give props to Bryant, who already looks like a superstar in his first MLB season with 23 home runs and an .847 OPS.

6

Over the last two days, Jung-Ho Kang has hit a 472-foot home run and a grand slam. What a massive impact the 28-year-old masher is making in Pittsburgh.

4
7

The Mets love what they have in 23-year-old right-hander Noah Syndergaard, who was skipped in the rotation recently to limit his workload and set him up for the post-season. He’ll return to the mound Saturday against the Atlanta Braves.

9
8

It hasn’t taken long for 21-year-old starter Luis Severino to make an impression, registering a 2.04 ERA with 34 strikeouts over his first 35 innings. However, his FIP of 3.96 indicates his production might dip down the road.

7
9

Carlos Correa is the best rookie in baseball and some within the industry believe he can quickly ascend into one of the league’s best players. He will be an Astros building block for years to come.

6
10

Before suffering a knee injury earlier in the week, 23-year-old outfielder Delino DeShields Jr. had been a regular contributor for the Rangers, registering 23 steals and 17 doubles along with 63 runs in 397 plate appearances.

11
11

The season has generally been a disaster for the Nationals, but one recent bright spot has been the play of rookie outfielder Michael Taylor, who’s mashed four home runs with a .919 OPS since August 20.

10
12

It looks like the Giants won’t be able to keep pace with the Dodgers in the NL West, but they’ve had some promising developments including third baseman Matt Duffy, who’s been a far better player than Pablo Sandoval at a fraction of the price.

12
13

The Twins are still hanging on in the Wild Card race and a big reason has been the play of Miguel Sano, who hit a monster 447-foot home run Wednesday night. Sano now has 16 long bombs in 234 plate appearances.

13
14

Andrew Heaney got rocked by the Blue Jays last month, but he’s been pretty solid for the most part, registering a 3.52 ERA with 62 strikeouts in his first MLB season.

14
15

The Orioles haven’t gotten much from rookies in 2015. For example, 25-year-old starter Mike Wright got shellacked in his two appearances against Toronto this year.

15
16

The Indians have a budding star in 21-year-old shortstop Francisco Lindor. He’s put up monster numbers (.309 AVG, .805 OPS, 8 HR, 34 RBI) in 76 games this season and should be even better in 2016.

16
17

The Rays haven’t had many bright spots on offence, but 26-year-old catcher Curt Casali has been one of them, mashing 10 home runs with an .898 OPS in 113 plate appearances this season. Small sample, we know.

17
18

It has been a lost season for the Red Sox, but new honcho Dave Dombrowski has to like what he sees from a few of the team’s young players including pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez, who’s allowed just five earned runs over his last 26 innings.

24
19

Diamondbacks infielder Jake Lamb has had some good moments this season, though consistency has been an issue for the 24-year-old.

18
20

The Padres went all-in on veteran players when a rebuilding effort might’ve been the more logical approach. San Diego does have one rookie playing a key role: second baseman Cory Spangenberg has 14 doubles and eight steals.

21
21

The White Sox could have a future ace in 22-year-old Carlos Rodon, and the team is already starting to see the production. Rodon has a 2.36 ERA with 44 strikeouts over his last 45.2 innings.

20
22

Fernando Rodney was a bust this season, but 25-year-old Carson Smith has impressed out of the bullpen, allowing just two earned runs since Aug. 22.

23
23

When David Price was a member of the Tigers, he once compared James McCann to Jason Varitek in terms of leadership potential. Since then, McCann has had a pretty solid rookie season, batting .267 with a .700 OPS in 97 games.

22
24

Remember this guy, Blue Jays fans? Justin Nicolino has a 3-3 record with a 3.72 ERA in eight starts this season. However, his strikeout rate could use some work. He has just 16 Ks in 48.1 innings.

26
25

The Athletics have had a rough stretch in terms of personnel decisions, trading away Josh Donaldson and Addison Russell, but there’s been some promise in outfielder Billy Burns, who is hitting .290 with four doubles and nine steals since the all-star break.

19
26

Prior to an ugly outing Tuesday, starter Taylor Jungmann had allowed just six earned runs in his last 10 starts. He’s been one of the lone bright spots in what has been a tumultuous season.

25
27

The Reds have a pair of intriguing young pitchers in Anthony Desclafani and Raisel Iglesias, who could become rotation staples next season with Johnny Cueto and Mike Leake moving at the trade deadline.

27
28

The Rockies have gotten solid production out of 27-year-old rookie Ben Paulsen, who’s hit 10 home runs with a .799 OPS in 99 games for Colorado. Now if only they could find some pitchers…

29
29

The Phillies have been a trainwreck, keeping veteran players too long and not getting enough prospects to build around. Still, 22-year-old righty Aaron Nola has impressed in 10 starts, registering a 3.56 ERA with 51 strikeouts in 60.2 innings. Some hope, at last!

The Braves have won two of their last 10 and are closing in on the worst record in baseball. I refuse to praise their player development.
