Washington Nationals centre fielder Denard Span had surgery for a sports hernia, and the team expects him to be ready for spring training in February.

Both the Nationals and Span tweeted about the operation on Wednesday.

Span batted .302 last season for the NL East champions, with 31 stolen bases and a Nationals-record 184 hits, which tied for the league lead.
