LOS ANGELES — San Diego Padres outfielder Cameron Maybin was reinstated from the restricted list on Wednesday after testing positive for an amphetamine.
He was suspended for 25 games without pay on July 23 after the positive test for the banned substance.
Maybin had said he used the substance to treat his attention deficit disorder, for which he previously had a therapeutic use exemption granted.
"We talked quite a bit before the suspension and he went through a lot of pain," Padres manager Bud Black said. "He had some feelings on this, as far as how it relates to him coming back on the team."
At the time of his suspension, Maybin was hitting .247, with one home run and nine RBIs in 62 games.
"When Cam’s right and he’s playing his game, he’s a good player. That means he’s getting base hits, driving the ball, stealing bases and playing defence," Black said. "We’ve got to get Cam back to where he’s a big contributor for us. He wants to help our team win, and he does that by being on the field and playing well."
Maybin was allowed to play in five minor league games before returning. He went 5 for 16 with two RBIs and two strikeouts for Triple-A El Paso.
To make room for Maybin on the 25-man roster, the Padres optioned infielder Jace Peterson to El Paso. The team also designated pitcher Bobby LaFromboise for assignment.
