Padres sign reliever Valverde to minor-league deal

SAN DIEGO — Reliever Jose Valverde has agreed to a minor league contract with the San Diego Padres.

Valverde, who turns 37 on March 24, was most recently with the New York Mets, making 21 appearances before he was released May 26. He had a 5.66 ERA in 20 2-3 innings.

Valverde also has pitched with Arizona, Houston and Detroit.

He has a 3.27 career ERA, 288 saves and a 27-33 record.
