NEW YORK — The Texas Rangers scored 10 runs in the third inning against the New York Yankees on Saturday, a night after a seven-run third en route to a 10-9 win.
Shin-Soo Choo and Prince Fielder each had two hits in the inning. It was the highest-scoring inning for Texas since an 11-run third against Houston in a 16-5 win over Aug. 29, 2013, according to STATS.
After Texas chased Yankees starter CC Sabathia, Choo capped the burst with a three-run, opposite-field homer to left. This was Sabathia’s shortest outing in six years.
New York began the day with four consecutive losses and eight in nine games. It was the most runs allowed by the Yankees in an inning since a 14-run second in a 22-4 loss to Cleveland on April 18, 2009.
Choo’s single put Texas ahead and Fielder followed with an RBI single to right. Choo scored when right fielder Carlos Beltran allowed the ball to roll past him for an error. Elvis Andrus’ two-run single made it 5-0 and Sabathia was removed.
Carlos Corporan hit an RBI double against Esmil Rogers, Jake Smolinski followed with a sacrifice fly and Choo hit opposite-field homer down the left-field line.
Sabathia allowed six runs in 2 1-3 innings, his briefest outing since June 21, 2009, against the Marlins, when he left after 1 1-3 innings because of a tight left biceps.
