The Toronto Blue Jays could end up moving utility infielder Emilio Bonifacio before Wednesday’s non-waiver trade deadline.
According to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports, Bonifacio is the Blue Jays player that is most likely to be traded.
The Blue Jays thought Bonifacio would be able to help fill the gap at second base when they acquired him from the Miami Marlins in the off-season but the 28-year-old has struggled in his first season in Toronto, hitting .214/.254/.314/.569 with just two home runs, 15 RBIs and 11 stolen bases in 84 games.
He has especially struggled on defence where the Dominican native has committed seven errors, all coming at second base.
Bonifacio signed a one-year, $2.6-million deal with the Blue Jays before the start of the season. He is under team control through 2014 as an arbitration-eligible player.
One other player the Blue Jays could look to move is veteran outfielder Melky Cabrera.
Cabrera, 28, has not made the impact the Blue Jays expected when signing him to a two-year, $16-million deal as a free agent last November.
The Dominican outfielder was an MVP candidate in 2012 before he was hit with a season-ending suspension for performance-enhancing drugs with the San Francisco Giants.
Cabrera’s name was linked with the Biogenesis case and some believe there is a possibility he could be suspended again.
In 86 games, Cabrera has batted .281/.322/.363/.684 with just three home runs and 30 RBIs in his first season with Toronto.
The non-waiver deadline is Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET.
