Report: Red Sox pay $72M for Cuban Castillo

The Boston Red Sox continues to aim at returning to the MLB's elite, landing highly coveted Cuban player Rusney Castillo. But they paid a very hefty price in order to acquire his rights.

The Boston Red Sox have reportedly agreed to sign free agent outfielder Rusney Castillo to a lucrative contract that will pay him $72.5 million over seven years.

The Cuban outfielder had numerous suitors, including the Chicago Cubs and Detroit Tigers. The Toronto Blue Jays were among the teams to scout Castillo at his showcases.

The 27-year-old will join a crowded Boston outfield that includes fellow Cuban Yoenis Cespedes, Shane Victorino, Daniel Nava, Jackie Bradley Jr., Brock Holt and Mookie Betts.

Castillo is considered close to big-league ready and while Ben Badler of Baseball America reported this summer that he isn’t a talent like Cespedes or Jose Abreu, he still profiles as either an everyday player or fourth outfielder.

Castillo, described as a plus runner and a solid line drive hitter, is represented by Jay Z’s Roc Nation Sports and CAA Sports.
