David Price’s tumultuous 2017 campaign continues to get worse.
The Boston Red Sox starter was placed on the 10-day disabled list retroactive to July 25 with left elbow inflammation, the team announced Friday.
Price was scheduled to start against the Kansas City Royals Friday night at Fenway in front of what would’ve presumably been a rowdy Boston crowd. The 31-year-old has been in the spotlight lately for a confrontation he had with Hall of Fame pitcher turned NESN analyst Dennis Eckersley. Price reportedly clashed with Eckersley on a team flight to Toronto in late June.
Rick Porcello will hit the mound for the Red Sox in Price’s place.
Price had a respectable 2016, making a career-high 35 starts in his first season with the Red Sox after signing a seven-year, $217-million contract. He has only made 11 appearances in 2017, though, and has clashed with the Boston media for much of the season after starting the year on the DL.
The Red Sox currently sit atop the AL East standings.
