RHP Ogando can earn up to $1.5M in bonuses

BOSTON — Alexi Ogando can earn up to $1.5 million bonuses under his contract with the Boston Red Sox.

Ogando agreed Friday to a one-year deal that guarantees him $1.5 million. The 31-year-old right-hander was 2-3 with a 6.84 ERA in 27 relief appearances for Texas last season, when the former All-Star didn’t pitch after June 3 because of inflammation in his right elbow.

His deal calls for $1 million in roster bonuses: $500,000 for one day on the active 25-man roster and $125,000 each for 100, 120, 135 and 150 days,

He also could earn $125,000 each for five, seven and 10 starts; $150,000 apiece for 12 and 15; and $200,000 for 17 and 20. And he could make $125,000 apiece for 35, 45, 50 and 60 games as a pitcher.

His total performance and roster bonuses are capped at $1.5 million.

Ogando made his major league debut in 2010 with Texas and was an AL All-Star the next season. He pitched five years for Texas, alternating seasons as a starter and a reliever.

Ogando pitched in relief 18 times for Texas in the post-season in 2010-11, going 2-0 with a 2.37 ERA.
