Romero, Drabek among Jays’ September call-ups

Ricky Romero will joining the Blue Jays for the rest of the 2013 season.

Ricky Romero is coming back to the big leagues.

The left-hander will be among a number of September call-ups that the Toronto Blue Jays plan to officially announce on Tuesday.

The Blue Jays also will bring up pitchers Kyle Drabek, Jeremy Jeffress, Luis Perez, and Canadian catcher Mike Nickeas.

Romero, who came into spring training as the projected No. 5 starter in the rotation, has spent the majority of the season with the Buffalo Bisons in triple-A.

The former Blue Jays ace had mixed results with Buffalo this year as he posted a 5-8 record with a 5.78 ERA, 81 strikeouts, and 63 walks in 113.2 innings.

He had a brief stint with Toronto earlier in the season when he made two starts in May to help fill in as a short-term starter. Romero pitched just 4.1 innings, compiling an 0-2 record with a 12.46 ERA.

Romero is expected to join the club for the remainder of the 2013 season.

Major League Baseball teams are able to expand their rosters from 25 to 40 in the month of September.
